Historia
We begin with a nameless young couple: a boy and a girl, teenagers in love. One day, she disappears . . . and her absence haunts him for the rest of his life. Thus begins a search for this lost love that takes the man into middle age and on a journey between the real world and an other world—a mysterious, perhaps imaginary, walled town where unicorns roam, where a Gatekeeper determines who can enter and who must remain behind, and where shadows become untethered from their selves.

Only get this if you love Murakami
Revisado: 11-23-24
There is nothing new here. And while you could say that for most of Murakami's recent books, it really applies here. This is basically a rift on Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. I can't explain it, but I love Murakami, so I enjoyed listening to this. If you're not a Murakami fan, this is most likely not for you. And if you're new to Murakami, it's probably best to start with A Wild Sheep Chase or Kafka on the Shore.

Historia
National Book Award-winning biographer Deirdre Bair explores her 15 remarkable years in Paris with Samuel Beckett and Simone de Beauvoir, painting intimate new portraits of two literary giants and revealing secrets of the biographical art. Drawing on Bair's extensive notes from the period, including never-before-told anecdotes and details considered impossible to publish at the time, Parisian Lives gives us an entirely new perspective on the all-too-human side of these legendary thinkers.

An American's Memoir Featuring Two Parisians
Revisado: 02-16-24
Is the more fitting title. This is much more about Bair's life, writing career, and adventures in academia than it is about Beckett and de Beavouir. I doubt we learn more about them then we would by reading their Wikipedia pages. It's written well enough and it breezes along, but read this only if you want to learn more about Bair than the other two.

Historia
Greg Giraldo was one of the most admired standup comedians of the 21st Century. This book tells his story, from his boyhood in Queens to his Ivy League education, to his decision to drop a law career to pursue standup comedy. The authors have researched his life and interviewed more than 60 people who knew Greg well - family, friends, standups, managers, and more - to produce a full picture of the brilliant yet complex figure who left the stage too soon.

By-the-numbers, no real insights
Revisado: 10-26-23
If you're a fan of Geraldo, this won't tell you much more than you already know. It tells you what Greg did, but doesn't go into the why. His childhood and college years are briefly covered, then we get a detailed recapping of his comedy career, followed by a short description of his end. We all know his greatest hits (how he killed at Comedy Central Roasts, his work on Tough Crowd, his stand up) so while I didn't mind hearing about them again, it wasn't anything new. I didn't know the details about his TV shows, so that was interesting. Going back to the whys, though, maybe it's impossible to know why an exceptionally smart and educated man would become an addict, but it wouldn't have hurt the authors to dig more deeply into his life. Was he bullied? Did he suffer from depression? Was he overly romantic?
As a primer on the life of Geraldo, this was good. I didn't mind listening to it. But this isn't the definitive biography of one of the greatest comedians of his time.

Historia
J. Robert Oppenheimer was one of the iconic figures of the 20th century, a brilliant physicist who led the effort to build the atomic bomb but later confronted the moral consequences of scientific progress. When he proposed international controls over atomic materials, opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb, and criticized plans for a nuclear war, his ideas were anathema to powerful advocates of a massive nuclear buildup during the anti-Communist hysteria of the early 1950s.

Well-researched. Terrible recording.
Revisado: 07-13-23
This is a well-written, detailed account of Oppenheimer's life. The first half -- which includes the dropping of the atomic bombs and their aftermath-- is very compelling. And thought provoking. Deploying the bombs might not have been the only way the US could get Japan to surrender. I learned many things about Oppenheimer's life. One that surprised me was his active social life. He wasn't the awkward man of science. He was quite a ladies man. The second half of the book, unfortunately, is not as compelling. This is not the fault of the writers. The second half of the book, like the second half of the subjects life, comprises his loss of status, and the government going after him over his ties to communism. There is a long courtroom scene. The politics is just not that interesting, especially compared to his origin story, his role in building the atomic bomb, and the impact its use had on the world and his conscience. While I definitely would recommend people read the book, I have to warn against buying this recording. It's terrible. Check out the other reviews. For some reason, from time to time, the narrator's pitch changes. It sounds like another voice and the first few times I encountered it, I thought I accidentally tapped onto another title. The one star is for the recording, not the narrator.

Historia
Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she's a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she's a disgrace; to design mavens, she's a revolutionary architect, and to 15-year-old Bee, she is a best friend and, simply, Mom.
Then Bernadette disappears. It began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette's intensifying allergy to Seattle - and people in general - has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands.

Clever story, but couldn't stand the narrator
Revisado: 12-06-22
She speaks in a shrill, self-satisfied, overly dramatic voice. Ideally, you don't really notice the narration because the story absorbs you. That's impossible to do here. I'm sure if I read this, I'd have enjoyed it a lot more. From the other reviews, I see many don't feel the way I do, so take this with a grain of salt. Definitely listen to the sample.

Historia
An American Tragedy is the story of Clyde Griffiths, who spends his life in the desperate pursuit of success. On a deeper, more profound level, it is the masterful portrayal of the society whose values both shape Clyde's ambitions and seal his fate; it is an unsurpassed depiction of the harsh realities of American life and of the dark side of the American dream.

Very long, but if you stick with it,,,
Revisado: 10-14-22
... you'll be rewarded. I had to fight to keep listening. I thought of quitting many times until I got to the middle. Feels like the first half is all set up. We learn about Clyde, his goals, the situation he's in, the woman he wants to marry, the woman who's in the way. All necessary to the plot, sure, but it's difficult for a reader in 2022 to be interested in all that detail. Once the plot you remember from the movie (A Place in the Sun) kicks in, this becomes very absorbing. I know it might be blasphemous to call the second half a mystery, but that's what it felt like. I'm a huge mystery fan; this was one of the best mysteries I've ever listened to or read.
I have two ratings for the story, really. First half: 3 stars. Second half: 5+ stars.

... with summaries of what they're about. You'll definitely be inspired to pick up a bunch of them to read/listen in their entirety. As long as you know that this is all the book provides, you should get this. If you expect anything more -- info on the authors, how well the books sold, the impact the books had on the zeitgeist -- you'll be disappointed.

"That Others May Live" is a mantra that defines the fearless men of Alaska's 212th Pararescue Unit, the PJs, one of the most elite military forces on the planet. Whether they are rescuing citizens injured and freezing in the Alaskan wilderness or saving wounded Rangers and SEALs in blazing firefights at war, the PJs are the least known and most highly trained of America's warriors. Never Quit is the true story of how Jimmy Settle, an Alaskan shoe-store clerk, became a Special Forces Operator and war hero.

A Very Impersonal Memoir
Revisado: 09-09-22
This reads more like a manual for how to become a pararescue jumper than about the life of a pararescue jumper. If you're interested in becoming the former, this is a must listen. Settle provides a thorough account of what's in store for you. You have a grunt's eye view of the training. Needless to say, the job requires courage and physical and mental toughness. The problem I had with the book is, we learn very little about Settle. We learn he grew up with a single-mom who survived a terrible childhood accident and taught him to never be late, and that's about it. Settle seems like an admirable person. Wish we got to know him a lot better.

More motivation than instruction
Revisado: 09-07-22
If you need help to get started and to keep going, this is for you. The author is very encouraging and offers numerous writing exercises. This does not, however, give you much instruction on how to write. It only covers the basics -- conflict, growth, change, etc. Other than those needing motivation, I can't see this helping anyone but beginners. And beginners who primarily want to write poetry. Lastly, the narrator chuckles after every second sentence or so. Have no idea if this is a nervous tic or an affectation, but I found it very annoying.

Great Book for First Person Oral Storytelling...
Revisado: 09-05-22
... and that's it. There's nothing wrong with that. In fact, being able to tell an effective story in public is a skill everyone should develop. This book offers a lot of tips on how to do that. But, this book is subtitled, "The Only Storytelling Guide You'll Ever Need." This is not the case. If you want to write essays, short stories, novellas, screenplays, plays, or novels, you'll definitely need other storytelling guides. This is like buying a cookbook that says it's the only cookbook you'll need and yet it only has Italian recipes. As an Italian cookbook, it's great. Otherwise, it's not. If you want to improve your ability to tell stories in public, this is for you. Just be aware that it is all this book will do. And even then, it is doubtful this is the only guide you'll need.
