I'd forgotten how the series started out. Good to refresh how it all began. A great cozy mystery.

Gildart Jackson brings life to Peter Grainger's words. It's a beautiful partnership that I have enjoyed listening to for years. Please keep the DCI in a state of semi-retirement, so I can listen to a new adventure in 2025!

I've enjoyed J.Tey's books for4 decades. Yes, They take a while to get into but that's the fun of listening to a story. I don't agree that her mysteries lack the laying out of clues.

The main characters are well-drawn , but take a while to become likeable. Unlike the first book, this one seemed to bog down in the first 1/3 of the book. I almost returned the audible but kept telling myself to give it one more chance. I'm glad I did! Hope the 3rd book will continue to build on the relationships that developed in book two.

Through the narrative, the reader can sense the team spirit of the Kings Lake office. The group effort at resolving the issues is what sets Peter Grainger's books apart from other detective stories where one person seems to "do it all".
The ties made in the story back to the DCI Smith series made the book more real, It connected this novel to the retired DCI Smith in ways that show how senior staff can nurture new employees and how beneficial the mentoring role is.

I liked the telling of Mary and Lakshmi's tale separate from Holmes, until the two tales wound together.

I've listened to many but not all Mary Russell books. The Beekeeping (1st book in series) used to be my favorite; now this one is!

I don't know how many times I wanted to just stop listening. Not because the storyline wasn't good but, because the author wrote the narrator as such a sanctimonious person who was way too sharing with every thought that came into her head. Take a clue from Poirot and just let " the little gray cells" do their work without TMI!
