Gildart Jackson brings life to Peter Grainger's words. It's a beautiful partnership that I have enjoyed listening to for years. Please keep the DCI in a state of semi-retirement, so I can listen to a new adventure in 2025!

Story
Diagnosed with ‘overwork’ and in the grip of debilitating claustrophobia, Inspector Alan Grant takes leave from Scotland Yard and heads for the peaceful home of his cousin Laura, who lives with her family in the Scottish Highlands. As the London mail draws into Inverness, he sees the surly sleeping-car attendant trying to rouse an unresponsive young man. He is compelled, firstly, to point out that the passenger is dead, and secondly to pick up the newspaper that has slipped onto the compartment floor.

I've enjoyed J.Tey's books for4 decades. Yes, They take a while to get into but that's the fun of listening to a story. I don't agree that her mysteries lack the laying out of clues.

The main characters are well-drawn , but take a while to become likeable. Unlike the first book, this one seemed to bog down in the first 1/3 of the book. I almost returned the audible but kept telling myself to give it one more chance. I'm glad I did! Hope the 3rd book will continue to build on the relationships that developed in book two.

Then this all happens quickly—they push the woman towards the car, one of the back doors opens, and they manhandle her inside. Sarah hears a muffled shout from the woman and the car pulls away. Good Teamwork has benefits over going it alone
Reviewed: 04-16-24
Through the narrative, the reader can sense the team spirit of the Kings Lake office. The group effort at resolving the issues is what sets Peter Grainger's books apart from other detective stories where one person seems to "do it all".
The ties made in the story back to the DCI Smith series made the book more real, It connected this novel to the retired DCI Smith in ways that show how senior staff can nurture new employees and how beneficial the mentoring role is.

smugness in the sense of just get over yourself
Reviewed: 01-16-24
I don't know how many times I wanted to just stop listening. Not because the storyline wasn't good but, because the author wrote the narrator as such a sanctimonious person who was way too sharing with every thought that came into her head. Take a clue from Poirot and just let " the little gray cells" do their work without TMI!
