The fascinating characters and sprawling yet coherent story excited and inspired me in a way few books do. It is, along with “Cutting for Stone,” on my best books ever list. I am a medical doctor, and this story also struck me as a compelling and inspiring modern-day version of “Arrowsmith.”

I loved the characters in this book—their imperfections and foibles, but also their generosity of spirit and intense embrace of life. A memorable book.

Not many books take a look at such a broad expanse if human history, and do so in a credible way. This is one of those rare books. And the author’s wry and often hilarious perspective added pleasure to the experience.

I have read a lot of John Green’s books, and like them all. But this is my favorite. It reminds me so much of the intensity of life as a teenager. Bravo!

This inspirational book of anecdotes about the lives of gang members brings a new way of thinking about them. They are people too, looking for something in their lives that is not so different than what I am looking for in my life. I was surprised at the striking similarities.

This was a good book to listen to while I was on long hikes in the hills of California, or on a long drive without kids.

I don’t agree with some of the underlying values that guide the characters’ lives. But I am glad to have (at last) read this book.

The author experienced a searing loss. Her spiritual and psychological resiliency in response to her loss are a powerful statement about the options we have when we face losses, and how we can go on to recover meaning and purpose in our lives.

Why watch crime scene shows when instead, you could read a sly and disconcerting book like thus that will keep you awake at night with new questions like: What is true happiness? Is human nature redeemable or are we intrinsically depraved and shallow creatures? What is the meaning of our existence? Thus book may take you places you have never been before. Happy reading, best done after starting on an anti-depressant medication!
