I liked the book overall but can’t help but feel like some of it should have been left on the cutting room floor. I like long books but this was a little much. Good overall though.

Story
In fiction, the spy is a glamorous figure whose secrets make or break peace, but, historically, has intelligence really been a vital step to military victories? In this breakthrough study, the preeminent war historian John Keegan goes to the heart of a series of important conflicts to develop a powerful argument about military intelligence. In his characteristically wry and perceptive prose, Keegan offers us nothing short of a new history of war through the prism of intelligence

Story
In April 1944, Rudolf Vrba became one of the very first Jews to escape from Auschwitz and make his way to freedom—among only a tiny handful who ever pulled off that near-impossible feat. He did it to reveal the truth of the death camp to the world—and to warn the last Jews of Europe what fate awaited them. Against all odds, Vrba and his fellow escapee, Fred Wetzler, climbed mountains, crossed rivers, and narrowly missed German bullets until they had smuggled out the first full account of Auschwitz the world had ever seen.

This is why you have a professional narrator, read audio books. There is nothing better than a true story even if the victory at the end is comparatively small compared to the big picture. Amazing story.

A sad tail of what bad decision making mixed with drugs can turn into. I was glad when this one ended. I couldn’t take another scam or “sting” or shady deal. It’s too bad ole Craig just couldn’t stay in Kansas and make the best of it. Sounds like he could have had a great life instead of persistently trying to be something he could never be.

Story
These are the stories that defy conventional logic. The proverbial vanished without a trace incidences, which happen a lot more (and a lot closer to your backyard) than almost anyone thinks. These are the missing whose situations are the hardest on loved ones left behind. The cases that are an embarrassment for park superintendents, rangers, and law enforcement charged with Search & Rescue.

The book basically dwells on the disappearance of one person and his father’s heroic, albeit not so well thought out, quest to find his son. There are other vanishings discussed in the book but the book always returns to the father, Randy’s search.

Investigative journalist Matthew Cole tells the story of the most lauded unit, SEAL Team 6, revealing a troubling pattern of war crimes and the deep moral rot beneath authorized narratives. From their origins in World War II, the SEALs have trained to be specialized killers with short missions. As the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan became the endless War on Terror, their violence spiraled out of control. Code Over Country details the high-level decisions that unleashed the SEALs’ carnage and the coverups that prevented their crimes from coming to light.

There are always going to be a few bad apples for sure in any organization. It does make you wonder though how many other things have gone on that we don’t know about as civilians. At the same time however these men go out to do a very difficult job and have been asked to do that job for very long period of time. I think at some point there are going to be some negative consequences.

Story
It’s rumoured that Dickens wanted to return to his classic novel Oliver Twist, to bring him back into a later book as an older character, but he never managed this before he died. However, if Oliver had returned, what would he have been like? Would the scars of his childhood affect the man he would become? And what of ‘Dodger’, sent to a land halfway around the world, his friend, mentor and master dead because of Oliver? Dodge & Twist is that story. The tale of two boys, 12 years later, returning into each other’s lives - for both good and bad.
