Story
Almost from the moment it was first set to paper, the music of Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) - technically superb, rich in quality, and widely imitated - has exemplified the Classical style, creating not only the Classical-era symphony but setting the standard, through his own 68 string quartets, against which that form has ever after been judged. And yet Haydn, despite the influence left by more than 1000 works, seems to no longer get his due, Now, in a series of eight vivid lectures, you can learn to understand and appreciate the music of one of the most original and influential composers of all time.

Story
The war in Ukraine is the ultimate real-life lesson of what can happen when a country disarms its citizens. Anti-gun zealots in the United States insist that the Second Amendment’s right to keep and bear arms is a “relic.” Try telling that to the people of Ukraine.

Excellent read.
Reviewed: 05-07-23
Mark Smith goes through in a lot of detail about what the Ukraine war has taught us about the importance of the second amendment to the constitution – and of course the right to keep and bear arms.
I emigrated to the USA in the mid-80s from Scotland and frankly for many years could not understand the “American obsession” as I called it with weapons. However, over the years I have come to realize the importance of those rights.
I have a regular weekly zoom call with my friends back in the UK and from time to time we will discuss and debate gun control. Of course, for decades many of the folks in Europe (and including myself) had become rather smug about the lack of guns and gun violence in Europe, but more recently the debate with my friends stops dead when I point out that the Ukraine gave their citizenry the right to bear and keep arms two days after the invasion by Russia. I think Europeans also want to ignore what happened in the Balkan wars – as not really Europe (it is). In Europe there has been to many incidents of military invasion by neighbors (Balkan wars, Ukraine and never mind WW1 and WW2 etc.) to ignore.
Frankly I doubt anyone would want to invade the USA, the threat is more likely to come from a government over-reach or local violence.
It’s difficult to understand why some politicians become obsessed with gun control and why they don’t want to attack the root causes of violence and they just want to take away a citizen’s ability to protect themselves.
I listen to Mark Smiths YouTube videos on the legal side of the second amendment and his videos are probably the best of them all. He has a very incisive mind, and I can’t help but wonder if many of the judges and justices follow his logical arguments. Anyways a great book to read and understand what the Ukraine war teaches about the necessity for gun rights.

Story
During the third week of February 1944, the combined Allied air forces based in Britain and Italy launched their first round-the-clock bomber offensive against Germany. Their goal: to smash the main factories and production centers of the Luftwaffe while also drawing German planes into an aerial battle of attrition to neutralize the Luftwaffe as a fighting force prior to the cross-channel invasion, planned for a few months later. Officially called Operation ARGUMENT, this aerial offensive quickly became known as “Big Week,” and it was one of the turning-points of World War II.

An epic of remarkable originality, Alone captures the heroism of World War II as movingly as any book in recent memory. Bringing to vivid life the world leaders, generals, and ordinary citizens who fought on both sides of the war, Michael Korda, the best-selling author of Clouds of Glory, chronicles the outbreak of hostilities, recalling as a prescient young boy the enveloping tension that defined pre-Blitz London, and then as a military historian the great events that would alter the course of the 20th century.

Story
Drawing on previously unpublished eyewitness accounts, prizewinning historian Donald L. Miller has written what critics are calling one of the most powerful accounts of warfare ever published. Here are the horror and heroism of World War II in the words of the men who fought it, the journalists who covered it, and the civilians who were caught in its fury. Miller gives us an up-close, deeply personal view of a war that was more savagely fought - and whose outcome was in greater doubt - than one might imagine. This is the war that Americans on the home front would have read about had they had access to previously censored testimony.
