Story
Sylvie Campos and Lauren Machado have hated each other since before they were born. For generations, the Campos and Machado families have blamed each other for stealing pastry recipes they claim their great-grandfathers originated before fleeing Castro's Cuba. Having spent their lives as rivals, Lauren and Sylvie are now in their early thirties and primed to take over their respective family bakeries. That means working long, hot, seasons of outdoor food festivals where they are forced to endure each other—albeit with a lot of bantering and barb-trading.

This book was a lot of fun! I loved the resolve in the end being that neither of them really had to give anything up. I love the dynamic stayed pretty consistent between them, just changed shapes.

Story
When Geraldine "Gerry" Largay first went missing on the Appalachian Trail in remote western Maine in 2013, the people of Maine were wrought with concern. When she was not found, the family, the wardens, and the Navy personnel who searched for her were devastated. The Maine Warden Service continued to follow leads for more than a year. They never completely gave up the search. Two years after her disappearance, her bones and scattered possessions were found by chance by two surveyors.

Ever since I heard the devestation in the game warden's voice on the episode of North Woods Law, this case stuck with me. The whole book is such a good idea to Gerri's impact on the people around her. It also does a good job not placing blame - it was just a tragedy. It's a heartbreaking read, and it'll stick with me.

Story
Life has become a farcical mess for icy British A-lister Elizabeth Thornton. America's most-hated villain stars in a top-rated TV medical drama that she hates. Now, she's been romantically linked to her perky, new co-star, Summer, due to the young woman's clumsiness. As a closeted actress, that's the last thing Elizabeth needs. If she could just get her dream movie role, life would be so much better. The only problem is that the eccentric French film-maker offering it insists on meeting her "girlfriend", Summer, first.

refreshing and fun

This was a very fun romance to read. Never was being gay wielded as a weapon even though both actresses were closeted. There were no big miscommunication tropes, and no big sacrifices made - they just genuinely bettered each other. I also love seeing romances with characters who are older (one main character is mid to late thirties), and it resonates.

dealing with all kinds of loss
Reviewed: 02-04-25
This book has such an interesting dynamic between the new and the old and the in-between. It deals with numerous types of loss and grief - of friends, of childhood, of yourself, etc. It also has such a good message about loving deeply flawed people anyway, and how the people who know have lived other lives and are other people to the people in those lives.

My favorite so far, I believe. This was such a fun look into Chih's personality and I had missed Almost Brilliant so much in the previous book. I think there was a great amount of mystery to this one, and also I think this was a fun take on a story unfolding as a story is told sort of thing.

I adored the style of this story that gets told from both perspectives - that of the human and that of the tiger - to show you how history is changed to fit the narrative that is needed. Loved Chih's personality developing more in this book. The introduced characters were very interesting no matter how brief.

This book was a short and beautiful listen. The imagery and language was really well-crafted. I really enjoyed the story-told-inside-a-story format. I think it's deceptively simple for something that tackles the topics it does as well as it does. Loved it.

Story
Emilia Drakon was once the youngest and kindest of the dragon sorcerers, but she's now the last of her kind. Betrayed and angry, she trades her meekness for a sword and embarks on a quest for vengeance that will lead her straight into the arms of the legendary Captain Maria Welles. Captain of the famed pirate ship, the Wicked Fate, Maria is every bit as treacherous and bloodthirsty as they say. She has her own vendetta and practically jumps at the chance to trick Emilia into joining her crew.

Yikes

I wanted to love this book. I really did. Pirates, dragons, and lesbians are my whole personality.
I really, really loved the pirate banter. I think all the side characters are intriguing. I think Judith and Emilia's friendship is very sweet, and I think the chemistry between Maria and Emilia has potential.
I could not get past Emilia's POV and attitude. I've never been a big fan of the trope of characters being so sheltered or out of touch with the world that they miss simple turns of phrase - like it's their first day on Earth (yet simultaneously they still manage to be THE BEST at numerous talents). That's a big part of Emilia's personality. I also found Emilia's constant headbutting with Maria right out of the gates infuriating considering a) she sought out Maria, b) she was warned and given many opportunities to turn around, and c) are contradictory and hypocritical at best. And while that can work, I just don't think the writing sold me on it to be anything more than really cumbersome.
I think the book has potential, and I think it's definitely someone's cup of tea (the reviews are mostly good!), it's just not mine.
