Story
Roy Appleman's East of Chosin, first published in 1987, won acclaim from reviewers, readers, and veterans and their families. For the first time, there was one complete and accessible record of what happened to the army troops trapped east of the Chosin Reservoir during the first wintry blast of the Korean War. Based heavily on the author's interviews and correspondence with the survivors, East of Chosin provided some of those men with their first clue to the fate of fellow soldiers.

Extremely thorough and factual account of the events prior to and during the battle east of Chosin Reservoir. Having been in the army and stationed in Korea I could empathize with the experiences dealt with in this book.

Story
Over the last 2,000 years, ambitious men have dreamed of forging vast empires and attaining eternal glory in battle, but of all the conquerors who took steps toward such dreams, none were ever as successful as antiquity’s first great conqueror. Leaders of the 20th century hoped to rival Napoleon’s accomplishments, while Napoleon aimed to emulate the accomplishments of Julius Caesar. But Caesar himself found inspiration in Alexander the Great (356-323 BCE), the Macedonian king who managed to stretch an empire from Greece to the Himalayas in Asia by the age of 30.

This is a short summary of Alexander’s last area of operation. Not particularly deep but inspiring. A few sections were repeated. The narration was clear and enjoyable to listen to.

Story
Upon assuming the presidency in 1953, Dwight Eisenhower came to be seen by many as a doddering lightweight. Yet behind the bland smile and apparent simplemindedness was a brilliant, intellectual tactician. As Evan Thomas reveals in his provocative examination of Ike's White House years, Eisenhower was a master of calculated duplicity. As with his bridge and poker games he was eventually forced to stop playing, Ike could be patient and ruthless in the con, and generous and expedient in his partnerships.

The intimate view of Ike’s relationships was fascinating. Learning about Ike’s apprehension over the U2 program and how the last flight probably derailed an early end to the Cold War was the most interesting.

Times Have Changed

It’s a time capsule of the way we were not so many years ago. Our society has really changed and listening to this book will prove it. Like all the Bond books I couldn’t stop listening. Everyone of these stories take me back in time. Fleming’s writing seems simple but it really pulls you in. I’m not going to talk about Bond’s prejudices, but that’s the way it was. I’m glad books like this are still available and not removed for political correctness. The reader is really good although he goes a bit overboard doing some of the American accents.

Story
In chronicling the adventurous life of legendary CIA operative Edward Lansdale, The Road Not Taken definitively reframes our understanding of the Vietnam War. In this epic biography of Edward Lansdale (1908-1987) best-selling historian Max Boot demonstrates how Lansdale pioneered a "hearts and mind" diplomacy, first in the Philippines, then in Vietnam. It was a visionary policy that, as Boot reveals, was ultimately crushed by America's giant military bureaucracy.

Overall I liked the book. Lots of detail about the postwar Philippines and Vietnam. His relationships with his family and Pat Kelly made me cringe though. Especially his love letters to Pat. Ed Lansdale did a lot of good and not so good. Kind of a flawed guy. Great story and reading though. Worth the time.

Story
For the past few hundred years, most of what we’ve been taught about the native cultures of North America came from reports authored by the conquerors and colonizers who destroyed them. Now - with the technological advances of modern archaeology and a new perspective on world history - we are finally able to piece together their compelling true stories. In Ancient Civilizations of North America, Professor Edwin Barnhart, Director of the Maya Exploration Center, will open your eyes to a fascinating world you never knew existed - even though you’ve been living right next to it, or even on top of it.

Started out kind of PC and elitist but I quickly got past that and really thought Barnhart gave a good performance. I ended up liking his style. Very informative. A bit revisionist regarding the European intervention in America. One of the more engaging classes and not a topic covered often to this degree.

Story
The history of the Romans as they advanced the frontiers of Classical civilization is often told as a story of warfare and conquest-the mighty legions encountering the "barbarians." But this only tells one side of the story.Who were the Celts, Goths, Huns, and Persians met by the Romans as they marched north and east? What were the political, military, and social institutions that made Rome so stable, allowing its power to be wielded against these different cultures for nearly three centuries?

This book engaged me from the very beginning. Its a topic that gets little attention. I got it just to learn about something new. It was surprisingly interesting. One of the few books I’d listen to everyday with great anticipation. The best Harl I’ve listened to so far. It’s like sitting at a bar and getting a history lesson from someone who was there.

Story
Until about 1800, the West and the Islamic realm were like two adjacent, parallel universes, each assuming itself to be the center of the world while ignoring the other. As Europeans colonized the globe, the two world histories intersected and the Western narrative drove the other one under. The West hardly noticed, but the Islamic world found the encounter profoundly disrupting.
