I am loving this series! The characters are quirky, fun and sometimes infuriating. The story is full of unexpected twists and turns.
The reader really helps bring the story to life.
I can't wait to start the next volume.

Story
Elementary school teacher Jacqueline "Jacks" Morales's marriage was far from perfect, but even in its ups and downs it was predictable, familiar. Or at least she thought it was...until two police officers showed up at her door with devastating news. Her husband of eight years, the one who should have been on a business trip to Kansas, had suffered a fatal car accident in Hawaii. And he wasn't alone.

Slow story and terrible narrator
Reviewed: 07-06-21
I really wanted to like this but I can't even finish it. The voice of the reader is just awful. The voice she is using makes this adult widow sound like a child. I can't take 9 plus hours of it,
The story, as much of it as I got through, makes little sense. If you wanted to know more about them as a couple, a trip to Maui wasn't necessary at all. There relationship was formed right in that town. Find out where they went there. Interview her friends. His friends. The bartender at their favorite spot. If the writers wanted to get the couple to the island, they should have thought of a better reason for them to go there.
Perhaps the non-sensical plot could have been overlooked if the narrator was better. Maybe I should just read the book. See if that redeems it in any way.

Tiffany can't avoid being funny: it's just who she is. But The Last Black Unicorn is so much more than a side-splittingly hilarious collection of essays - it's a memoir of the struggles of one woman who came from nothing and nowhere. A woman who was able to achieve her dreams by reveling in her pain and awkwardness, showing the world who she really is, and inspiring others through the power of laughter.

I adore Tiffany Haddish. She has an amazing spirit and she's hilarious. But the book wasn't as great as she is.
Be warned, this is not a "laugh a minute" book. She tells her story raw. Parts of it will break your heart. If you're looking for a funny road trip worthy audio book,
I'd suggest you adjust your expectations before picking this one.

Story
In Autobiography of a Fat Bride, Laurie Notaro tries painfully to make the transition from all-night partyer and bar-stool regular to mortgagee with plumbing problems and no air conditioning. Laurie finds grown-up life just as harrowing as her reckless youth, as she meets Mr. Right, moves in, settles down, and crosses the toe-stubbing threshold of matrimony.

What disappointed you about Autobiography of a Fat Bride?
I almost never rate an audio book unless I loved it. Audio books can be tricky because if I don't like it, it's hard for me to tell if it's the book that I don't like, or the reader. But for whatever the reason, I didn't like or relate to any of the characters accept Nanna. She was adorable. But I loathed the main character. I found her completely unlikable. Always complaining. whining and generally miserable to be around.
Some of the stories seemed like they weren't fully fleshed out. As if she just had a word count to meet.
What could Laurie Notaro have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Maybe it would have been better with a different reader.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The only redeeming character in the book, for me, was Nanna. She was adorable. I enjoyed the stories where she was featured.
Any additional comments?
So many people seemed to have loved this book, that I feel like I should give the author at least 1 more try. Maybe I'll just get another one on kindle, so I can tell if it's really her I don't like or just the way the reader presented her.

What disappointed you about Undead and Unwed?
I loved the Sookie Stackhouse series and was looking for something else of that sort. Although Sookie annoyed me from time to time, my dislike of Betsy was from beginning to end. She is supposed to be an adult woman but behaves more like a bratty teen. She is rude, blissful in her ignorance, overly judgmental, unlikable. I will not continue the series. Honestly, the only character I found interesting was Sinclair.
