Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Story
The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

This book is pretty good. But I will add a warning. While this series is fantastic at times. It has plenty of flaws. Mostly the ending of book 5. I won’t spoil it, but I wasn’t expecting or satisfied with the ending. I kinda wish I had stopped with book 4. You have been warned.

This was my first time listening to any of the authors series. While I loved the book as a whole, the ending really hurt. But I will say the next book wizard in exile fix’s a lot of this book. And in a fairly good way. So if you feel discouraged or disappointed by this one do try the next series. The storm king gets to heal in a pretty satisfying way.

Not gonna lie. I love this series. The plot, humor, and characters are top tier. It’s difficult to understand what immortality would look like. How it would strip away everything you love, and how one would choose to feel about things because of that. But here. It’s masterfully done.
I highly recommend it these books and cannot wait for the next one!
