It’s a tough one for a narrator

Very choppy prose.
Interesting story but not much depth.
First person - who just matter-of-factly tells of what is going on, then matter-of-factly tells us of conclusions or guesses about what it all means.
Kinda robotic.
But definitely an inspiration for many characters and scenes from Malazan.

When Phil Hanley was in first grade, he realized something that would forever set him apart from his peers: he couldn’t read. His teachers were ill-equipped to assist him, and he slipped through the school’s cracks, year by year falling further and further behind his friends. Finally, he was diagnosed with dyslexia, a learning disability that would shape the rest of his life. Unable to pursue college or a traditional job, Phil was thrust into a life defined by unconventional twists. Eventually, he found himself on a stage with a microphone, a spotlight, and five minutes of jokes.

Story
Millions of years beyond our time, our Earth has long since stopped spinning—and giant flora have taken over the sunlit half of the motionless world. Here humans are among the very few animal species that still exist, struggling to survive against enormous odds, but they have become small and weak, and their numbers have dwindled to almost nothing. When the aging leader of Gren's tribe decrees it is time for the old ones to go "Up," the younger are left to make their own way below.

Andrew Ranulf Blankenship is a handsome, stylish nonconformist with wry wit, a classic Mustang, and a massive library. He is also a recovering alcoholic and a practicing warlock, able to speak with the dead through film. His house is a maze of sorcerous booby traps and escape tunnels, as yours might be if you were sitting on a treasury of Russian magic stolen from the Soviet Union thirty years ago.

I like the pacing. It’s almost like poetry at times. It’s weirdly dark and turns some relatively common magical tropes into more interesting takes on standard magical “spells”. I’m Canadian, He mentions Canada a few times. Bonus points…

Second half pretty good
First half too sappy, naive and a continuation of death’s end’s too many coincidences (ex: AA)
Some nice closing of threads that were not addressed originall
I don’t know what the deal is but these relationships are really dysfunctional, out dated and 2 dimensional …
Solid overall
