Story
Emily Walker hates having her carefully crafted world disrupted by anyone, most of all her legendary nemesis, Jack Bennett. He’s the opposite of the wonderful heroes she dreams up in her double life as a romance writer, which is why Emily was perfectly happy when Jack left Rome, Kentucky, mid-school year with his fiancée. The last thing Emily saw coming was Jack’s return at the start of the summer after calling off the wedding and ending his relationship, but he’s here to stay—as her colleague and her neighbor.

So boring!

I couldn't get past 60 minutes of this book. Unfortunately, since I didn't purchase it with a credit, I can't return it, which seems like a serious flaw in the Audible return policy. Such a waste of money.

I got her fired. Okay, so I’d had a bad day and took it out on a bystander in a pizza shop. But there’s nothing innocent about Ally Morales. She proves that her first day of her new job in my office, after being hired by my mother. So, maybe, her colorful, annoying, inexplicably alluring personality brightens up the magazine’s offices that have felt like a prison for the past year. Maybe, I like that she argues with me in front of the editorial staff. And maybe, my after-hours fantasies are haunted by those brown eyes and that sharp tongue.

Save your credit

I have not disliked a book as much as this one in a long time. Dominic, the 45 year old male protagonist, has zero redeeming qualities. I kept waiting for some clue that he was a sympathetic character, and there was none. I kept hoping that Ali would show some back bone and dump him, but that didn't happen. The only reason I listened until the last 10 minutes is because I used a credit on this. Do yourself a favor and choose something else.

Story
After moving from a small country town to Seattle, Heather Baxter marries Tom, a widowed doctor with a young son and teenage daughter. A working vacation overseas seems like the perfect way to bring the new family together, but once they’re deep in the Australian outback, the jet-lagged and exhausted kids are so over their new mom. When they discover remote Dutch Island, off-limits to outside visitors, the family talks their way onto the ferry. But as soon as they set foot on the island, which is run by a tightly knit clan of locals, everything feels wrong.

Terrible!

The story might have been engaging enough to listen to, but the narrator is terrible. I couldn't finish the book because I was cringing at the narration.

I love a suspense story that keeps me guessing throughout the book. Just when I thought I had everything figured out, a new twist sent me back to guessing again. Both narrators are excellent--so much so that I listened to the entire book in two days. Definitely worth a credit.

Story
Four people in a car, hoping to make Chicago by morning. One man driving, eyes on the road. Another man next to him, telling stories that don’t add up. A woman in the back, silent and worried. And next to her, a huge man with a broken nose, hitching a ride east to Virginia.

Love Reacher but hate this book
Reviewed: 10-08-12
As previous reviewers have noted, a large part of the problem of this book is the narrator's rendition of Reacher with a broken nose. On top of that, the plot is boring. I listened until I only had two hours of the book left, and I couldn't take it anymore. I didn't care what happened to the characters...even after 12 hours of time invested into their story. The FBI agents were caricatures of bumbling, inept police. Leave it to Reacher to step into the gap--except 12 hours into the book, he still hadn't. I've loved this series, but this book is terrible. Save your money and get something else.

Sadly disappointed
Reviewed: 10-19-11
After reading some reviews of Bohjalian's new novel, I was looking forward to an eerie story to ease my work commute. Unfortunately, halfway through the story I am bogged down by my extreme dislike of the second person point of view that pops up in every other chapter. Each time the story switches to Chip Linton's point of view, I am distanced from the story because I hear the narrator saying "You" when he's talking about Chip. I find it so distracting that I've actually taken to fast forwarding through these chapters of the book. It's a shame because I think I would have been drawn into the story if the author had chosen to use the first person instead.
