Wow. Often contemporary literary fiction asks you to be patient and ease into the story, but not this one. The first minutes gripped me and held me captive until I'd finished. The characters were alive in my mind. The Audible version with multiple narrators is superb.

Story
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Story
Isaiah was Samuel's and Samuel was Isaiah's. That was the way it was since the beginning, and the way it was to be until the end. In the barn they tended to the animals, but also to each other, transforming the hollowed-out shed into a place of human refuge, a source of intimacy and hope in a world ruled by vicious masters. But when an older man - a fellow slave - seeks to gain favor by preaching the master's gospel on the plantation, the enslaved begin to turn on their own.

Terrific anthology

I read this series every year, and it's wonderful to be able to listen to the stories now. The multiple narrators are great. The stories are a stellar representation of the diversity of authors, themes, story structures. One weirdness with the audiobook, though -- some of the stories are not in the same order as in the e-book (and I assume the print book). That shouldn't be a problem, but I'm in a book club that is discussing the stories in order, one a week, and listeners have to be careful to read the same story!

Story
The Overstory unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fable that range from antebellum New York to the late 20th-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. An air force loadmaster in the Vietnam War is shot out of the sky, then saved by falling into a banyan. An artist inherits 100 years of photographic portraits, all of the same doomed American chestnut. A hard-partying undergraduate in the late 1980s electrocutes herself, dies, and is sent back into life by creatures of air and light.

This is simply the best novel I read or listened to in 2018. I was swept into it, both because the plot and characters (both humans and trees) captivated me and because Suzanne Toren's narration is superb. It's long, but so engrossing that I didn't want it to end. I'm stunned by the power of this audiobook. You don't have to be in love with trees already to appreciate this novel, but I'll bet that by the time you're a few chapters in, you'll be looking trees in a whole new way.

Story
In her phenomenally popular essays and long-running Tumblr blog, Roxane Gay has written with intimacy and sensitivity about food and body, using her own emotional and psychological struggles as a means of exploring our shared anxieties over pleasure, consumption, appearance, and health. As a woman who describes her own body as "wildly undisciplined", Roxane understands the tension between desire and denial, between self-comfort and self-care.

Story
In The Power, the world is a recognizable place: There's a rich Nigerian boy who lounges around the family pool; a foster kid whose religious parents hide their true nature; an ambitious American politician; a tough London girl from a tricky family. But then a vital new force takes root and flourishes, causing their lives to converge with devastating effect. Teenage girls now have immense physical power: They can cause agonizing pain and even death. And, with this small twist of nature, the world drastically resets.

Powerful novel
Reviewed: 12-15-17
I found The Power gripping and surprising. Knowing the premise, I thought I could predict the outcome. Yes, but no. However, I was irritated by the narrator's exaggerated accents. The American accents were not believable -- either nasal and strident or Southern -- and this pulled me away from the story. I wish the narrator had had a dialect coach. I still recommend the audiobook, and the novel was listed by the New York Times as one of the 5 best novels of 2017.

Story
When his mother passed away at the age of 78, Sherman Alexie responded the only way he knew how: He wrote. The result is this stunning memoir. Featuring 78 poems and 78 essays, Alexie shares raw, angry, funny, profane, tender memories of a childhood few can imagine - growing up dirt poor on an Indian reservation, one of four children raised by alcoholic parents. Throughout, a portrait emerges of his mother as a beautiful, mercurial, abusive, intelligent, complicated woman.

You Don't Have to Say You Love Me is one of the best memoirs I've every read or listened to. I've purposely portioned it out, an hour at a time, because I don't want it to end. The story is compelling and unexpected. The writing style -- prose + poetry -- is so stunning that I sometimes have to stop the book and replay a section that I want to ponder or commit to memory. Alexie is the perfect narrator. I'd give it a hundred-star rating if I could. One of my favorite books ever.

Story
It’s 2011, and Samuel Andresen-Anderson—college professor, stalled writer—has a Nix of his own: his mother, Faye. He hasn’t seen her in decades, not since she abandoned the family when he was a boy. Now she’s re-appeared, having committed an absurd crime that electrifies the nightly news, beguiles the internet, and inflames a politically divided country. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl who married her high-school sweetheart.

The novel is just the kind I love -- complex, well written, with unique characters and a startling plot. The narration is superb.
Any additional comments?
I heartily recommend this novel, especially for boomer-aged readers who lived through the protests of the sixties.

Where does Behind Her Eyes rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I usually read complex, literary fiction, but I also love a good psychological thriller. This one was so involving that I kept wanting to listen instead of work. I found myself relishing commutes, errands, and long walks so that I had an excuse to keep listening. Highly recommended!
What was one of the most memorable moments of Behind Her Eyes?
The twists at the end. Please people, don't give anything away!
What about the narrators’s performance did you like?
Excellent narration, capturing the tone, cadence, and personality of the different characters.
