weird narration
Reviewed: 10-05-19
There were times when the narrator repeated a phrase 2-3 times, almost as if she lost her place while reading. Slightly distracting but didn't take away from the story all together

I never did bond with the heroine. I thought she was boring and stubborn, not sassy or hardworking. I thought the brothers were wimps. The narrator's voice grated initially, got better over time. Sorry I wasted a credit on this book

Great story to read, a new intriguing new world to escape to. The story is abbreviated as it is abridged so not the same character development as in the written story, but great narrator, soothing voice

Captain John Staple’s exploits in the Peninsula had earned him the sobriquet Crazy Jack amongst his fellows in the Dragoon Guards. Now home from Waterloo, life in peacetime is rather dull for the adventure-loving Captain. But when he finds himself lost at an unmanned toll-house in the Pennines, his soldiering days suddenly pale away beside an adventure - and romance - of a lifetime.

Story
Cleone Charteris is the joy and despair of all the young men of the countryside, and she seeks a husband - a man who can duel and dice with the best of them. One of the men after her heart is the masterful and handsome Mr. Philip Jettan. But compared to other men in 18th-century England, Philip is out of step - he is careless in his appearance and, in Cleone's own words, she cannot marry him because he is 'a raw country bumpkin'. He even refuses to buy a wig!

Was so pleased to find in audiobook this series that I 've enjoyed and reread. I was able to lose myself in the story but I found the narrator's voice distracting and irritating. Her voice for Chuck made him sound small and annoying rather than the grand man that he is. The different ethnic voices distracted from the story, rather than adding to it. It was a good thing that I really enjoy the story or I might not have finished the book.

After participating in the Jacobite Rising of 1745, Robin and Prudence, brother and sister, become engaged in a swashbuckling, romantic adventure. Our hero and heroine must cross-dress and switch genders if they are to escape prosecution a humorous move that allows Heyer to explore the manners and language affectations of the period as the two romp through the elite saloons and clubs of London.

a long time favorite read
Reviewed: 01-16-17
I have always liked the Masqueradere, liked it that it was written from an earlier, even more ceremonial age. I am willing to suspend credibility that two people could pull off a Masquerade such as this in the full light of the ton. It allows for 2 love stories- the unknown with the ring who saves her, and that moment when Tony holds down Pru's arm as the wine drips. And the impossible father.
I happily bought the book but after a half hour of listening to this narrator's pretty voice I went back ro read the reviews. Think of Richard Armitage making you believe that Kate is a girl, only to find Robin a charming man. I just couldn't believe that Prudence had a light pretty voice- it would have given her away in 5 minutes.
I suspended belief and finished it and will probably listen to it again and again. It is sad when one thing, an important thing like the narrator, takes it from being a thing of joy forever.
