Story
Back when Harry Bosch was just a rookie homicide detective, he had an inspiring mentor who taught him to take the work personally and light the fire of relentlessness for every case. Now that mentor, John Jack Thompson, is dead, but after his funeral his widow hands Bosch a murder book that Thompson took with him when he left the LAPD 20 years before - the unsolved killing of a troubled young man in an alley used for drug deals.

Can't stand Ballard
Reviewed: 04-03-25
I have enjoyed the Bosch series, but when he introduced Renee Ballard, I have lost interest. Her character is really embarrassing...she is the epitome of all of the negative assumptions people have about female law enforcement. Hard to get past how she is portrayed in every book she is a part of.

Story
Mariana Andros is a brilliant but troubled group therapist who becomes fixated on The Maidens when one member, a friend of Mariana’s niece Zoe, is found murdered in Cambridge. Mariana, who was once herself a student at the university, quickly suspects that behind the idyllic beauty of the spires and turrets, and beneath the ancient traditions, lies something sinister. And she becomes convinced that, despite his alibi, Edward Fosca is guilty of the murder. But why would the professor target one of his students?

Twists and turns

Enjoyed this author in a previous book and came back for more. The writing continued to keep me interested throughout, and I loved how some of the story has little hints reflected back to The Silent Patient, although you don't need to listen to one before the other. Definitely kept me guessing in the story, which I like.

Was recommended to listen to, and was disappointed
Reviewed: 01-06-24
Took this book from a list of hot reads and not familiar with the author. This is one of those books I was thankful when it was over. Almost EVERY character in the book is deceitful and self-centered, and it was impossible to look for someone to cheer for. A lot of parts left hanging, so I imagine there will be another book with the same characters. Even then, I would not be interested in drudging up all of the historical pains suffered from the past that were painfully covered in detail in this book.

Story
Littleport, Maine, has always felt like two separate towns: an ideal vacation enclave for the wealthy, whose summer homes line the coastline, and a simple harbor community for the year-round residents whose livelihoods rely on service to the visitors. Typically, fierce friendships never develop between a local and a summer girl - but that’s just what happens with visitor Avery Greer and Littleport resident Sadie Loman. Each summer for almost a decade, the girls are inseparable - until Sadie is found dead.

First book from Megan Miranda. The story centered around things that "just so happened" to work out in her favor to keep the story going, like half of the actual book must have ended up on the cutting room floor. Was one of those books I felt a little disappointed I wasted a credit.

Story
Cody Hoyt, while a brilliant cop, is an alcoholic struggling with two months of sobriety when his mentor and AA sponsor Hank Winters is found burned to death in a remote mountain cabin. At first it looks like the suicide of a man who's fallen off the wagon, but Cody knows Hank better than that. Sober for fourteen years, Hank took pride in his hard-won sobriety and never hesitated to drop whatever he was doing to talk Cody off a ledge. When Cody takes a closer look at the scene of his friend's death, it becomes apparent that foul play is at hand.

Disappointed
Reviewed: 02-28-22
I expected this to be entertaining, and only a couple of chapters in, I only kept listening because I had already paid for it. The author represents the main character as the worst type of stereotypical cop who is drunk, out of control, and knows he is hard to love, yet the author does nothing to change your mind or feel any sympathy for him. The storyline goes on and on without any thought, and every event that occurs just happens to "fall into place" making the story predictable in parts. The relationships between each character are never fully developed, to the point I thought I was listening to an abridged version of the book. Disappointed, for sure.
