Definitely worth the wait!

Having been a King fan since my teens (yes; I'm THAT old), I've eagerly awaited each new offering over the years and have rarely been disappointed,
Such is the case with Billy Summers. One of my favorite features of Stephen King's works is the way he draws the characters. I really get a feel for who they are, not just on paper, but as if they were someone I know personally. The characters are never one-dimensional, and I always feel as though I'm experiencing their journey through King's words. This book is no exception. Billy is a carefully drawn contradiction; he is a hitman that only kills bad people, but does that make him a bad guy as well? As the story progresses, Billy's self awareness grows, and his struggle with that concept becomes more apparent.
This is a great read (or listen). I was torn between trying to finish the book in a few sittings, or savoring it and drawing it out as long as possible. My impatience won, and I stayed up into the wee hours (way later than an old gal should have) to get to the end. It was worth every minute of lost sleep.
I'd like to add that I was pleasantly surprised by the narration. When I saw that the book would be read by Paul Sparks, I immediately flashed back to his Mickey Doyle character on Boardwalk Empire, and his trademark giggle. I was skeptical. Those of us that enjoy our audiobooks know that bad narration can tank a great book, but Sparks narration was absolute genius! He brought the characters to life with technicolor, and I'll be adding him to my list of favorite narrators.
And now comes the interminable wait until the NEXT Stephen King book!

A chubby little girl with blond hair, blue eyes, and ordinary looks, Victoria Dawson has always felt out of place in her family, especially in body conscious Los Angeles. Cujo is a 200-pound Saint Bernard, the best friend Brett Camber has ever had. One day Cujo chases a rabbit into a cave inhabited by sick bats. What happens to Cujo, how he becomes a horrifying vortex inescapably drawing in all the people around him, makes for one of the most heart-stopping novels Stephen King has ever written.

Still an amazing book.

I had read The Dead Zone when the book originally came out, as I have done with all Stephen King's books. In the past year or so, I have been listening to them all on audio books, and the experience is like running into an old friend after many years apart. It had been so many years since I read the book originally that I had forgotten quite a bit of the story, thus it was almost as if I was being introduced to the story for the first time. I still found the characters vividly drawn, the tale expertly woven, and the journey through the book enhanced by James Franco 's inspired narration. I have NEVER been disappointed by one of King's stories, and The Dead Zone is no exception. If anything, it was better the second time around.
