Wonderfully complex web of mystery & murder
Reviewed: 02-23-25
Loved the plot as I’ve enjoyed all the Heathcliff Lenox mysteries. The plots are well constructed and really hold the listener’s attention. Although I’ve had no issue previously with earlier books, the narration in this one was poor when it came to voicing the older women characters. So very high and screechy, it was not only painful to listen but almost wholly non- understandable. I had to get the book on Kindle so as to go over these parts. And kind of caricatures of older women, as well. In actuality, many older women’s voices actually deepen - they don’t get higher. It was even difficult with one or two younger women characters as well. I hope this isn’t going to be an issue in future.

I think this is the very best of the Cherringham books by Costello and Richards. Great plot - intricately woven against the holiday background and so well narrated by Neil Dudgeon. I hope Costello and Richards put out more holiday stories. Listening to this mystery during Christmas was just perfect, adding to the seasonal feelings and enjoyment.

Another wonderful Dickens short story combining spectral images with Christmas. Wonderful turns of phrase and digressions throughout. To name but one, “faithful obstructions”, for servants - in other words, easier to do it yourself if not for pride of position. Playful, fun, and illuminating. One of his less listened-to stories; well worth it for anyone, but especially for fans.

Dickens deserves better. I finally muted the narration so I could get to the point where I could leave this review. Worse, I did not want to use a credit for such a cheap purchase - only $2.40 but what a waste. And Audible won’t return the money even as a credit as Smazon does with books one returns

Loved the story and Derek Jacobi’s narration although I always think of Sherlock Holmes with a deeper voice than Jacobi’s characterization.
But the music was really annoying! Please narration only with maybe musical interludes if you must.

Love Miss Busby and her friends set in the post World War I background. The small village near Oxford is rife with gossip and, of course, murder which Miss Busby and her friends set to solving despite the police detective’s trying to warn hem off. With a bit of romance, too, it’s a delightful listen.

May 1912. After the previous year’s deadly heatwave, it’s been an uneventful spring in Littleton Cotterell. Though for Lady Hardcastle and her fiercely loyal lady’s maid Flo, at least there are the provincial delights of the village’s inaugural art exhibition—and bicycle race—to look forward to. But at the exhibition opening, there’s a panicked shout of ‘Fire!’ In the confusion, the main attraction—an extremely expensive book—is stolen from under everyone’s nose, as is a valuable painting lent by Sir Hector Farley-Stroud.

This is part of a great series and an enjoyable episode. Fascinating mystery of theft and murder that pulls the reader along to get to the final denouement of all. Lady Hardcastle and her able assistant are reliably enterprising with a good dose of humor. Once again, an enjoyable and onput downable story with a great narrator as well.

In Agatha Christie’s short story, “The Chocolate Box,” Poirot describes a case he was unable to solve. Investigating the apparent poisoning of a popular Belgian civil servant, Poirot goes undercover to expose the murderer, only to discover the case is not so tidy as he thinks. But who could have wanted the man dead? This short story originally appeared in the May 23, 1923 issue of The Sketch magazine.

Great Christie short story
Reviewed: 11-05-23
Love Poirot and this is an excellent short story by Christie that illustrates both the detective’s processes as well as a failure. Narration is a bit disappointing as one expects to hear a voice similar to David Suchet’s. This narrator gives Poirot a somewhat higher register which is a bit jarring and distracting.

One of the best Miss Fisher stories with a number of fascinating mysteries interwoven together with solutions provided by other characters in the stories. But such poor narration especially compared to Stephanie Daniel who was marvelous and really brought Phryne and friends to life. Maybe I’ll just read the books from now on and keep Daniel’s great narration in my head. She really is the voice of Phryne and friends.

January 1910. A journalist has been killed in a suspicious blaze. Everything points to a group of suffragettes, but the apparent culprit insists she is innocent. When Lady Hardcastle receives a letter from a suffragette requesting her urgent help, the retired spy turned sleuth knows only she stands between an accused young woman and the gallows. Evidence at the scene makes Lizzie Worrel’s innocence difficult to believe, and with the police treating it as an open-and-shut case of arson, Lady Hardcastle faces a barrage of resistance as she tries to dig out the truth.

I really love this series of historical mysteries. This one involves the women’s suffrage movement along with some romance and arson. Lady Hardcastle and her servant/companion, Flo are just great and make a wonderfully daring yet amusing and close team. They solve a mysterious death in an arson case and prevent a large Diamond heist as well as dealing with some local skullduggery. Great read and wonderful narration as always.

Actually a puzzle with a great twist, this was a really enjoyable mystery for holiday listening. Along with Lady Hardcastle and her maid/companion, Flo, the usual cast of characters in this series are all present and involved. I particularly liked the Christmas festive details of food, decor, and traditional activities of an English Edwardian holiday. I wish there were more such kinds of holiday mysteries available on Audible. These kinds of stories really add to the holidays as one can listen while shopping, decorating, and doing all the holiday prep.
