The problem with lying about having a super weapon is that the bad guys might believe they have nothing to lose by doing something stupid that both sides will regret. Or, they might just call your bluff. Either way, the Merry Band of Pirates need a plan to deal with the Fallout.

the series is dead. this book is awful
Reviewed: 12-18-21
The original story line that made expeditionary force so great is no longer here at all. Skippy isn't even in the first five chapters. I couldn't get past the fifth chapter. terrible story....not even a story. it's just random events as part of a war with little to no context even if you just read the last book.

Story
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Before picking up this book I read a bunch of the top reviews that were mostly neutral to negative on the story. I have no idea why because it's an absolute delightful storty that's extremely easy to follow and pretty well thought through.
I'll curtail that by adding that I am a doctor and having the bio knowledge as well as a background in engineering does make it immensely more fun because of its relative accuracy. you do not need to be any sort of doctor or engineer however. Having some very basic understanding of the existence of microbes and the fact that different metals are, different, does help and I feel that's where some of the negative reviews come from.
These people giving negative reviews seemingly don't even live in the real world. the concept that bacteria exist, bombs explode and people are made of cells is pretty universal amongst humans. You just need to be aware that this book is science forward and it seems some of these negative reviews are people that are clearly science backwards.
fantastic book that's very well written. so so fun to listen to. highly recommended and I can't wait for the movie. even if they butcher the book I'm excited to see the move. hopefully it gets made.

Story
Chris Anderson takes you to the front lines of a new industrial revolution as today’s entrepreneurs, using open source design and 3-D printing, bring manufacturing to the desktop. In an age of custom-fabricated, do-it-yourself product design and creation, the collective potential of a million garage tinkerers and enthusiasts is about to be unleashed, driving a resurgence of American manufacturing. A generation of "Makers" using the Web’s innovation model will help drive the next big wave in the global economy, as the new technologies of digital design and rapid prototyping gives everyone the power to invent.

this is a good story for grandparents in the year 2019. I'd you're younger than 40 and at all interested in tech and startups, you are probably already aware of most of this stuff if not all of it.

Story
What really distinguishes the people who literally change the world - those creative geniuses who give us one breakthrough after another? What differentiates Marie Curie or Elon Musk from the merely creative, the many one-hit wonders among us? Melissa Schilling, one of the world's leading experts on innovation, invites us into the lives of eight people - Albert Einstein, Benjamin Franklin, Elon Musk, Dean Kamen, Nikola Tesla, Marie Curie, Thomas Edison, and Steve Jobs - to identify the traits and experiences that drove them to make spectacular breakthroughs, over and over again.

cool but a long winded synopsis...
Reviewed: 06-20-19
It's an alright book but it's a long winded synopsis of many other books. The ideas are presented as a sort of meta-study but there is little direction towards an original hypothesis. Ideas that are presented are not in such a way that a reader would gain much from them in their own lives. It's more of a 'mater of fact' book rather than anything approachable. Anyone looking for actual leadership/innovation research should maybe just go directly to the books used to write this book. At least for me, books such as the one of Jobs or Tesla were more insightful than this one aggregate book

Story
United Nations Special Operations Command sent an elite expeditionary force of soldiers and pilots out on a simple recon mission, and somehow along the way they sparked an alien civil war. Now the not-at-all-merry band of pirates is in desperate trouble, again. Their stolen alien starship is falling apart, thousands of light years from home. The ancient alien AI they nicknamed Skippy is apparently dead, and even if they can by some miracle revive him, he might never be the same.

In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the next Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup “unicorn” promised to revolutionize the medical industry with its breakthrough device, which performed the whole range of laboratory tests from a single drop of blood. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.5 billion.

from the very beginning it sets a tone to let you know the company is a sham. that continues and the story is about a company few know and a person that may not be important enough for a book. sure it may give some minor insight to something in sillicone valley but I'd definitely recommend the Jobs/apple book or 'the everything store' book over this. however listen/read those with a grain of salt, I'm sure they were written to boost stock prices.
regarding the books biological premise, I'm a life science major/dentist and found it completely dry and uninteresting. The tech is not explained in depth and not really 'hip', for lack of a better description.

The epic and highly anticipated conclusion to the listener-favorite series that had countless Audible listeners (and employees) hooked from the very first Bob - featuring, as always, a flawless performance from the inimitable Ray Porter. Being a sentient spaceship really should be more fun. But after spreading out through space for almost a century, Bob and his clones just can't stay out of trouble. They've created enough colonies so humanity shouldn't go extinct.

Overall this is a really fun trilogy of stories that is far more believable than most other sci-fi stories. It's still quite out there however so much enjoyment. Unfortunately the third edition is a bit drawn out maybe. Still a very good story and a great audiobook. One of my favorites for sure.

a required book after the first one.
Reviewed: 07-29-18
after reading/listening to the first book you, this one picks up without a single beat lost. the side stories are interesting but excessive and left me anxiously awaiting the progression of the main story.
having given himself an entire universe of possibilities with almost endless directions, the author somehow reined it in and kept the story within a typical persons mental capacity.
this books universe is not unlike star wars or Stargate. I would say it's star wars mixed with game of thrones. the story is set among the stars with multiple tracks but is much more 'believable' than star wars or stargate or star trek. at least it was to me.
one star off because it requires me to pickup the third book when it could have really just been two longer books. they're relatively short...
