Something happened that night in the woods at Camp Red Hawk. But all Joel and Leah can recall is sneaking out for a late hike with five camp friends and that only the two of them and their friend Mike returned. They have no memory of what happened to the others. No memory of anything after leaving the camp. In the years that follow, they realize something has changed inside of them. They are different from others in ways they never should be. In ways that send their lives down disturbing and terrifying paths.

I give a low rating because I end up dissatisfied. The setting close to a reservation and wonderful feeling of the lakes and woods are always a pleasure. The story moves between several dysfunctional families and human beings. The twists and turns of the story ate gripping and believable. But several are left dangling at the end and I have some difficulty working out who did what and why.
I like this author and will persevere, I may even read the second half of this book again to see what, if anything, I missed.
Disappointed!

Two dead bodies changed the course of my life that fall. One of them I knew and the other I'd never laid eyes on until I saw him in the morgue. The first was a local PI of suspect reputation. He'd been gunned down near the beach at Santa Teresa. It looked like a robbery gone bad. The other was on the beach six weeks later. He'd been sleeping rough. Probably homeless. No identification. A slip of paper with Millhone's name and number was in his pants pocket. The coroner asked her to come to the morgue to see if she could ID him.

many elements combine to make this book much more than a thriller. Kinsey's octogenarian landlord and his siblings provide a gently amusing side story now joined by Ed the cat. An empathic look into the lives of one group of homeless debunks some of our predudices. Then there is the sleazy background to drug testing and a murder or two and we have a classic Sue Grafton novel.

if this writer tries another book a strict editor would improve finished product. There are good ideas but the story runs away with them

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

I bought this book after being entranced by "My Grandmother sends her regards and apologies". At first I couldn't get into it , it seemed depressing. I didn't see past a grumpy old man bent on suicide. skipped almost to the end and began to see another book underneath the apparent gloom. I've now read it again from beginning to end and join the rave reviewers! this book may well turn into a classic.

A slow start and I nearly gave up feeling this was a "man's" book. Slowly the civil rights and Vietnam war background gave the novel substance. The characters could have been better developed. Narration was adequate. Of its genre probably good but not really for me.

I almost stopped listening after first few chapters but the unfolding events of US politics over the past few weeks together with Edward Snowdon, Julian Asange, Michael Moore and others. kept my finger from the stop button.
The further the story progressed the more horrifyingly possible the premise became. The threads that pull us in so many directions were well explored and answered the question "it can't happen here" with a resounding "Oh yes it can!!!!)
