This series by Kate L. Mary is definitely not as engaging, in my opinion, as The Broken World Series. Nothing seems new or fresh here, but I was still drawn in by her strong character development and the interwoven relationships. Unfortunately, though, a few things pull attention from the strong characterization, and one of those is the repetitive description she employs throughout. One such example is the inordinate number of times the author refers to a character's eyes as being big and round. C'mon! There are so many lovely synonyms for both words, yet she seems to have forgotten all about the existence of a thesaurus. So, "Her eyes were so big and so round..." it is. Finally, the worst offense, by far, is the real impetus for this review - the inflection the narrator puts on specific words - with the absolute worst being the word "been". Instead of pronouncing it as if it rhymes with hen, as I've always heard it pronounced, the narrator pronounces it so that it sounds like she's saying the word bean! It makes me cringe and want to throw my phone out the window. Petty, perhaps, but I can't help being utterly annoyed by this!!! As a whole, it's a strong series, especially when read in conjunction with Broken World, but sadly, this narrator detracts from the overall listening experience.

There are a couple of characters who, in ny opinion, needed to either be fleshed out more or pared down to only a mention. For instance, the inclusion of the teenage boy in the boat and the conflict he was experiencing that was wholly unrelated to the main storyline was distracting. However, these are minor, and completely subjective, flaws. All in all, I wholeheartedly enjoyed this book. Early on, there were several options as to who the "bad guy" might be, and even after finding out who's behind it all, the author managed to keep me on the edge of my seat right up until the very end. Overall, this was an entertaining, twisty-turny, good 'til the last word read/listen, and I can't wait to read more of this author's work.
