Story
Lolly Blanchard's life only seems to give her lemons. Ten years ago, after her mother’s tragic death, she broke up with her first love and abandoned her dream of opening a restaurant in order to keep her family’s struggling Seattle diner afloat and care for her younger sister and grieving father. Now, a decade later, she dutifully whips up the diner’s famous lemon meringue pies each morning while still pining for all she's lost. As Lolly’s thirty-third birthday approaches, her quirky great-aunt gives her a mysterious gift.

A bit bumpy at first but ended well!

I had the ending figured out around Chapter 38 (47 total chapters) but I was pleasantly surprised that it didn’t take away from the charm of the ending. This was an audio book which made some of the timeline shifts a bit tricky to keep ahold of so I very well may put this on my physical reread TBR. Super cute story… charming just keeps coming to mind when I think of it. Would definitely recommend!

*Trigger warning: miscarriage.
I just ordered the paperback because I need the recipes she shares in print. Such a great listen. Deep in places. Hard - really hard in others. Light and joy filled in most. So good!

Story
After losing her boyfriend, apartment, and job in the same day, Janie Morris can't help wondering what new torment fate has in store. To her utter mortification, Quinn Sullivan—a.k.a. Sir McHotpants—witnesses it all then keeps turning up like a pair of shoes you lust after but can't afford. The last thing she expects is for Quinn—the focus of her slightly, albeit harmless, stalkerish tendencies—to make her an offer she can't refuse.

Endearingly Quirky

Disclaimer: The part in my bio about “rambly”….. well you’re about to get your first true experience with what that means.
When it comes to reading, my first love is anything series/series connected. One of my hard and fast rules of series reading is that no one piece of work that is connected gets left behind. When doing some research into Smartypants Romance books after reading Jiffy Kates Stud Muffin, I found that Penny Reid was the origin to what is proving to be the most multi-author connected collection there is. I may have even created a spreadsheet to help get all of the books in order… yes, I am that person.
Now for the actual review: I had high hopes for my first Penny Reid book and although it wasn’t a binge listen, it was pretty darn good. Neanderthal Seeks Human has many charming attributes, one being Janie Morris’s character. I read her as being on the autism spectrum and after reading a few other reviews I see that I am not alone in that assumption. She was endearingly quirky and as a fellow rambler, I fell in love with her speech patterns.
At the beginning of the book, Janie seems to be taking a long ride on the struggle bus. She loses her job and finds herself boyfriendless and homeless all on the same day. Her lack of confidence is portrayed with comedic fashion and when coupled with her brilliant Wikipedia mind we can’t help but laugh out loud many times. Janie and I are now best friends.
I could write so much more about our female lead because I clearly have a girl-crush, but I suppose I should introduce you to the second half of our RomCom duo. Quinn Sullivan works in the high-rise building that housed Janie’s ex-employer. He is quiet and mysterious but very clearly enamored with Janie, who is pretty much clueless with his feelings until his lips are on hers. He is fiercely protective of her from the very beginning and while it feels a bit forced we soon realize there is plenty for Quinn to be worried about when it comes to Janie’s safety… one of those things being Janie’s very own sister.
As promised, no spoilers, so I’ll end my review with the strong suggestion that you dive head first into this adorable fiery book and have fun following the masterful trail of connected reads.

Much needed laughable listen!
Reviewed: 12-05-19
I am currently smack dab in the middle of the most stressful time I have ever had in my 42 years of life. And I have lived a lot of life so to say that means I’m pretty much losing my ever loving mind. I set out to find something to listen to that I could lose myself in, something lighthearted and yet meaningful. This absolutely was the best listen for me at this exact moment. The characters were well described, you couldn’t help but fall in love with each one. The narrator was hands-down one of the best I have listened to as of yet. I laughed and I cried… For me that equals a winner. I just overall really enjoyed this book.
