Light, well-written, fun
Reviewed: 03-11-20
I enjoy the occasional light, well-done read, but they’re hard to find! Loved the characters and premise of this novel, and I marvel at the author’s ability to imbue it with consistently great humor. (Aunt Midge!) Yeah, you’ve got some stereotypical hunky guys and some basic, repetitive underlying themes, but if you’re looking for a funny and touching story that doesn’t tax the brain and makes you want to enjoy your commute, this is it.

Billy Todd has always been different. Most people called him odd, and those were the nice people. Though he was born with a learning disability, Billy's parents never allowed him to consider himself disabled. Raised to be self-sufficient, Billy might not be as smart as some, but he was a lot smarter than people realized.

Dystopia with a positive spin
Reviewed: 01-11-20
I don’t generally like dystopian novels - too depressing- but I thoroughly enjoyed this tale of people coming together to create a strong community in the wake of a disastrous world plague. The relationships and personal growth are the main story and could have been set in any challenging environment. It’s a little simplistic- too much repetition of points the author wants to hammer home and written maybe for teens? But overall a good tale with excellent narration by Christopher Lane.

Story
After a long and eventful life, Allan Karlsson ends up in a nursing home, believing it to be his last stop. The only problem is that he's still in good health, and in one day, he turns 100. A big celebration is in the works, but Allan really isn't interested (and he'd like a bit more control over his vodka consumption). So he decides to escape. He climbs out the window in his slippers and embarks on a hilarious and entirely unexpected journey, involving, among other surprises, a suitcase stuffed with cash.

In a sleepy seaside town in Maine, recently widowed Eveleth "Evvie" Drake rarely leaves her large, painfully empty house nearly a year after her husband’s death in a car crash. Everyone in town, even her best friend, Andy, thinks grief keeps her locked inside, and Evvie doesn’t correct them. Meanwhile, in New York City, Dean Tenney, former Major League pitcher and Andy’s childhood best friend, is wrestling with what miserable athletes living out their worst nightmares call the "yips": he can’t throw straight anymore, and, even worse, he can’t figure out why.

Super witty romance with insight
Reviewed: 08-21-19
This is an enjoyable romance with good, real-life complications. Basically, we’re all broken in ways we may not recognize or admit to. The characters in this story must confront their broken parts in order to move forward. I loved the very witty dialogue and super talented narrator. Enjoyed this as an entertaining novel that makes you think about what your friends aren’t saying

Story
From the day that old Nana Reja found a baby abandoned under a bridge, the life of a small Mexican town forever changed. Disfigured and covered in a blanket of bees, little Simonopio is for some locals the stuff of superstition, a child kissed by the devil. But he is welcomed by landowners Francisco and Beatriz Morales, who adopt him and care for him. As he grows up, Simonopio becomes a cause for wonder to the Morales family, because when the uncannily gifted child closes his eyes, he can see what no one else can - visions of all that’s yet to come, both beautiful and dangerous.

Good if you can hang in there
Reviewed: 08-12-19
I'm glad I listened to this book, and - in the end - I was gratified, Basically, a very kind Mexican family takes in an abandoned newborn who has a cleft palate and an attached swarm of bees during the early 20th century. The child and the bees have a magical relationship, and the child has a gift that allows him to foresee certain things. Through war, plague, and one evil individual, the child works to protect the family.
The book does a good job telling the story of middle-class, hard-working people confronted with the injustices wrought by life's vagaries, but it digresses too often and in too much detail. I would have chopped a few chapters that went on and on in, what I felt was, unnecessary, irrelevant detail.
I also wasn't crazy about the main female narrator. Her inflections and pauses took me awhile to get used to.

I'm giving this 5 stars not because it's the Great American Novel, but because - for this genre - it's great! it's a light, well-written romance-comedy, which I happen to love. In a nutshelll: Girl hates boy, boy hates girl, brother and sister of girl and boy get married. Girl and boy "have" to go on bro's and sis's honeymoon because bro and sis become insanely ill from food poisoning at their wedding reception. There's a bit of intrigue and girl has an interesting angsty back-story. Not cheesey; thoroughly entertaining.

Great story plus self help/insight
Reviewed: 08-12-19
I'm not into self-help books but I chose this title because it sounded like a good story. And it is! It's also excellent insight into psychotherapy, and how people work through the traumas we all face. This is such a well-told story, I had to look up the author to see - is she really a mental health therapist? Yes, she is. She gives a very honest, self-deprecating portrayal of her own challenges while sharing the captivating stories of some of her clients (names changed and identities protected.) Brittany Pressley does a great job narrating, with an upbeat, light tone. I loved this for the story and for the many insights into how we can all deal with our issues.

For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.
