Story
Following the events in Network Effect, the Barish-Estranza corporation has sent rescue ships to a newly colonized planet in peril, as well as additional SecUnits. But if there's an ethical corporation out there, Murderbot has yet to find it, and if Barish-Estranza can't have the planet, they're sure as hell not leaving without something. If that something just happens to be an entire colony of humans, well, a free workforce is a decent runner-up prize. But there's something wrong with Murderbot; it isn't running within normal operational parameters.

how you need the trauma recovery module, FFS. Don't we all, sometimes? Once again, a stellar performance by Kevin R. Free. As Murderbot accesses more of it's own emotions, Mr. Free communicates that to the listener. These are wonderful books. Selfishly, I hope Ms. Wells keeps on writing them. For me.

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Story
Civil war looms in the Bobiverse in this brand-new, epic-length adventure by Audible number one best seller Dennis E. Taylor. More than a hundred years ago, Bender set out for the stars and was never heard from again. There has been no trace of him despite numerous searches by his clone-mates. Now Bob is determined to organize an expedition to learn Bender’s fate - whatever the cost. But nothing is ever simple in the Bobiverse. Bob’s descendants are out to the 24th generation now, and replicative drift has produced individuals who can barely be considered Bobs anymore.

This book may be the best fourth book in a trilogy I have ever read. Good story, great characters, and a great adventure. Plus, plenty of mystery to carry on to a fifth book. Love the surprising references to some of my recent SciFi favorites. I won't spoil it-and as always the narration is fabulous.

Sigh

The narrator was great. Really. I will probably look for more of Mr. Baldwin's narration. I only listened to about 15 minutes of the beginning of this book, and realized it was some kind of political diatribe. I was hoping to hear more of the adventures of Tom Stranger and his unpaid intern, Jimmy. And, if it had been straight up an intergalactic insurance adventure, it would have been a great, funny, enormously entertaining listen. Too bad.

Story
Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.

Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

My new favorite narrator
Reviewed: 04-25-18
What made the experience of listening to Columbus Day the most enjoyable?
The narrator, R.C. Bray, is stellar. He makes each character distinct. I have a few narrators of audio books that I follow: Patrick Tull, George Guidall, and Jonathan Cecil, to name just a few. I am adding R.C. Bray to my list of those narrators who deliver a memorable performance.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Colonel Joe, of course. There is an inherent charm in space battles told from the POV of an average Army grunt. I wonder if the author has personal experience of Army life-as a former Army sergeant myself I really connected with Joe.
Which character – as performed by R.C. Bray – was your favorite?
Skippy is fun-his snark and seeming forgetfulness as an all powerful being are very accessible.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I laughed out loud quite a lot at the comic turns the story took.
Any additional comments?
I hesitated to start these books based on some of the reviews. I did worry that Skippy, as a deus ex machina, was brought in to prop up poor plotting. Mr. Alanson had written Joe and Humanity into a corner, and there truly seemed no way out but a slow, painful end to Joe and Earth. Skippy was a fortuitous find. As I read further, I realized that Skippy is flawed-his giant ego causes him to make mistakes. He has an inexplicable forgetfulness that adds tension to action situations. He has his own mission of self discovery, but seems to be beginning to care for Joe and Humanity that may overtake his own need to find his origin. As he finds a lot about humanity to keep him interested-fantasy baseball leagues!-he may choose to stay with Joe and keep Earth safe. I have to listen to Book Two now...

Story
Our universe is ruled by physics, and faster-than-light travel is not possible - until the discovery of The Flow, an extradimensional field we can access at certain points in space-time that transports us to other worlds, around other stars. Humanity flows away from Earth, into space, and in time forgets our home world and creates a new empire, the Interdependency, whose ethos requires that no one human outpost can survive without the others. It's a hedge against interstellar war - and a system of control for the rulers of the empire.

Entertaining

Would you listen to The Collapsing Empire again? Why?
Yes. I often listen to books more than once, and pick up details the second time around.
What other book might you compare The Collapsing Empire to and why?
I would compare it to the Expanse series by James S.A. Corey. The Corey books are more scientifically plausible, and are favorites of mine.
What about Wil Wheaton’s performance did you like?
Wil Wheaton goes on my list of narrators to follow. I had not heard him before this book. He did an excellent job, his characterizations are good, I appreciate his enunciation and his voice is very pleasant. I hope he will work more as a narrator in other genres-I do not listen to a lot of science fiction. He is right up there with George Guidall, Patrick Tull, James Marsters, and Jefferson Mays for me-narrators that I will follow to a book that I might not have considered otherwise.
Any additional comments?
I look forward to the series. This book was my introduction to this author, and I will look for his other work.
