When choosing this book I guess I didn’t note that it was horror. It started out promising and normal, even as far as half way through. The last maybe 2 hours it became bizarre. Finished it since I was that far in. Would not recommend.

So boring I almost quit a couple chapters in but hate to quit something I purchased. I paused to read the reviews which seemed positive. I found this to be totally unbelievable and just awful. The narrators male voices were terrible.

Story
She was covered from head to toe in expensive wool and plaid, the sort of stuff one saw at the Burberry boutique in Harrods. She carried a leather bookbag rather than a nylon backpack. Her patent leather ballet slippers were glossy and bright. She was proper, the new girl, modest. But there was something else about her.... At an exclusive private school in Switzerland, mystery surrounds the identity of the beautiful raven-haired girl who arrives each morning in a motorcade fit for a head of state. She is said to be the daughter of a wealthy international businessman.

Not for me

Although I have enjoyed spy novels previously I have never “read” this author. Was unfamiliar with any of these characters from previous books. I completed but could not keep track of who was who but found it to boring to put in the effort. I have enjoyed this narrator in a previous medical thriller but found him harder to follow here. Too muffled or lack of distinction between characters?? Probably will not choose a book by this author again.

I almost quit a couple chapters in but I had just marked a previous science fiction one as finished. It was even worse than this and I try not to be a quitter. It took me 3/4 of the book to get these characters straight. I just didn’t care enough to invest in them. I just let the story roll on as background. It’s finally finished, hope the next one in my queue is a good one after two duds.

I haven’t totally ruled out listening to audible originals as OCCASIONALLY there is a good one. This is not one of them. Thankfully it was short. Narrator would be good for a YA audiobook.

Kim Edwards' stunning novel begins on a winter night in 1964 in Lexington, Kentucky, when a blizzard forces Dr. David Henry to deliver his own twins. His son, born first, is perfectly healthy, but the doctor immediately recognizes that his daughter has Down syndrome. Rationalizing it as a need to protect Norah, his wife, he makes a split-second decision that will alter all of their lives forever. He asks his nurse, Caroline, to take the baby away to an institution and never to reveal the secret. Instead she disappears into another city to raise the child herself.

No denying the author is a talented writer. Her prose formed pictures in my mind. The narration was pretty good, lacking a little as she voiced Paul or his father. The story, however was lengthy and just not that exciting. I prefer more action in my "listens."
