Story
In 1779, Shawnees from Chillicothe, a community in the Ohio country, told the British, "We have always been the frontier." Their statement challenges an oft-held belief that American Indians derive their unique identities from longstanding ties to native lands. By tracking Shawnee people and migrations from 1400 to 1754, Stephen Warren illustrates how Shawnees made a life for themselves at the crossroads of empires and competing tribes, embracing mobility and often moving willingly toward violent borderlands.

Shawnee history deserves a better telling.

Dry and too-often repetitive. I enjoyed learning more about the Shawnee, but this text desperately needed an engaged editor.

Slow and Not Interesting

Ugh -- what a slog.
Reviewed: 02-18-19
I enjoyed only two of the stories included in this anthology. I've enjoyed other Tor anthologies, but this one was really a long & brutal slog. I'm very seriously considering returning the book to get a credit back, which is not an option that I usually consider. Even a credit back won't retrieve my lost time.

Story
On the surface, the Victorian age is one of propriety, industry, prudishness and piety. But scratch the surface and you’ll find scandal, sadism, sex, madness, malice and murder. Presented by Stephen Fry, this series delves deep into a period of time we think we know, to discover an altogether darker reality. The stories we’re told offer a different perspective on an era which underwent massive social change. As education, trade, technology and culture blossomed, why was there an undercurrent of the ‘forbidden’ festering beneath Victorian society?

The best stories pull readers in and keep them turning the pages, eager to discover more—to find the answer to the question: "And then what happened?" The true hallmark of great literature is great imagination, and as Neil Gaiman and Al Sarrantonio prove with this outstanding collection, when it comes to great fiction, all genres are equal.

A wildly uneven collection
Reviewed: 01-02-17
I really enjoyed a few of the stories in this collection, but many were shockingly weak. A coincidence that Mr. Gaiman's story was particularly good, while the stories that immediately preceeded & immediately followed his story were both unsoesj as by bad?
