A weak book in the series, that feels like filler
Reviewed: 02-03-25
I have enjoyed this series a lot so far. This book felt a bit like it was just filler, waiting for the 9th floor fun to start. While better than a filler book before, I defiantly didn't love this one. The addition of the card game felt either forced or desperate, and just wasn't very good. The high point was the politics of the factions talking about what will happen on the 9th floor, but the day to day of what Carl and Doughnut were doing was pretty weak. I'm looking forward to the next book, but I'm also worried that Dinniman is running out of ideas and the book after that will be really boring.
Still worth it to get to book 7 I think. We will see.

A part of me wants to run away again. The memory of my death still haunts my dreams. But this is my home now. And I'll be damned if I give it up without a fight. I mean, all I have to do is learn how to navigate xianxia politics and train for battle while simultaneously running my farm and uncovering an ancient cataclysm that apparently destroyed the Azure Hills back in the day. Meanwhile, I'm about to be a father . . . Man, I'm kinda screwed, aren't I? At least I can call in the cavalry—ahem, poultry—to help.

I have really enjoyed these book. They are more than a light hearted LitRPG book that I consume and then forget about. These books really have some depth of emotion and character development. The first two books felt like mostly character development and world building in a small area. The 3rd book branched out to the fighting arena, giving it a very different feel while also introducing many new sects and parts of the world. This book gave the payoff of explaining the mystery that has been building, and made the world exponentially bigger, setting up for an amazing 5th book. It almost seems like everything up to this was just an introduction, and the real story is about to start.
So good! Highly recommended!

The worst book in the series so far, but not bad
Reviewed: 10-02-24
Ok, so I have loved this series so far. I like the character development, the world building, and especially the politics of how outside the dungeon is effecting the inside. This one had some of that, but was just slow. I actually took a few week break right in the middle of it. It just didn't pull me in and make me want to go back to listening. It was a bit of a chore.
The setting was multiple bubble worlds that worked well to break up Carl from the friends he had made in the last book, which worked fine, but it also kept him safe from the enemies he had made along the way. It definitely got better by the end, but overall the pacing just wasn't great and it felt a little slow and drawn out.
I am writing this review after I finished the next book, and I will say it is worth pushing thru. If this is the worst book in the series so far, the next book is the best. Definitely worth a listen.

The top 10 list is populated. The sponsorship program is open. The difficulty is ramping up. The first three floors were nothing compared to what Carl and Donut now face. The Iron Tangle. An impossibly complicated subway system built out of the world's subterranean railway systems, all combined and then tied together into a knot. Up is down.

Another great book in the series!

I feel this may be where the book really starts to branch out. It starts looking more about what is happening outside of the dungeon, giving a little bit more politics and factions, thus really helping set up tension for following floors.
The floor setting was good, but I feel it somehow lacked a little bit. The subway system wasn't overly complicated once it was figured out, but it seemed so at the beginning and led to some confusion. I understand that there needs to be confusion for Carl and his companions, but it shouldn't translate directly like that to the listener. Other than that, I can't put my finger on why i didn't find this book as good as the last two. Maybe it felt a little repetitive, but there were a few good things set up for the future. This one just seemed a little slow I guess.
Still, the series is great and I highly suggest a listen

I really liked the first book in this series. It was neat and new. The character development was cool, and the world development was better. The rules of the game were set up well, and I couldn't wait to see what happened next.
sadly, what happened next just isn't as interesting. This story gives the MC a windfall of money, and that just takes a lot of the tension out of the story. He even talks about how going to a tournament isn't that important, because they were doing it for money and they have that now. There just doesn't seem to be any more goals for them to be working towards, and that makes it uninteresting.
If Cooper comes out with another one i'll probably get it, but if that one isn't a lot better, i'll probably be done with the series.

The ratings and views are off the chart. The fans just can't get enough. The dungeon gets more dangerous each day. But in a grinder designed to chew up and spit out crawlers by the millions, Carl and Princess Donut need to work harder than ever just to survive. They call it the Over City. A sprawling, once-thriving metropolis devastated by a mysterious calamity. But these streets are far from abandoned. An undead circus trawls the ruins. Murdered prostitutes rain from the sky. An ancient spell is finally ready to reveal its dark purpose.

This series has become my favorite LitRPG. Carl and Doughnut are both awesome, and I love the relationship that is being built between them. Other characters are getting introduced now, but slow enough that I have time to learn to appreciate each one. The story is all about the 3rd floor, and that is different enough that it allowed for some big changes from the first book so it still feels new and fresh. There is just enough mix of politics in it that makes you remember there is an outside enemy that they are dealing with, and is used perfectly to set things up for future books. Honestly, this is just really good.

A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

This really hit all the points a good LitRPG needs. The character development was great, and really only focused on the two main characters, so it wasn't to watered down. The world building was neat, but with the dungeon changing every floor, it allowed for great versatility in the story. The game rules like mana points and stuff were set, but there was also so much of it that you would never know about all the other things out there. This also gave freedom to do different things without it feeling like it was breaking the rules or being cheap. The game math was there, but it was overall pretty light so it didn't bog the story down.
honestly, this was really great. I love the relationship between Carl and Doughnut. The action is written well, and I just don't really have any negatives to say about this book.

I'm done with this series
Reviewed: 05-12-24
Ok, this is an interesting one. Let me start by saying that normally I don't like dramatized books with sound effects and a cast of thousands. That being said, I really thought this was done very well and have nothing against it for this. nice job. Next I'll say that I'm a big comic book nerd, but most of what I know is Marvel, so most of this series was brand new to me.
This book is a collection of short stories, and like the first book, it started out primarily following the dream god. It was pretty good, and I enjoy the stories about the 7 endless. Sadly, about half way thru the book, the endless were completely gone and it was either unrelated, or extremely loosely related stories. These stories weren't good, and it was difficult for me to get thru them. It honestly was a struggle, as they were so boring and poorly paced. eventually, with maybe 2 hours left of the book, I finally just quit.
I looked back on my review of the first book, and sadly it followed this rather closely. It started out about Dream, and then went of on some rather unenjoyable tangents.
Sadly, this just wasn't as good as the first book, and still had just as many problems, with the entire last half of the book not being good. I will not be getting the next one, and won't be watching season 2 of the Netflix series either. This just ruined it for me.
maybe I'll watch the first half of the Netflix season...
