Story
Eighty-one-year-old widow Maggie Burkhardt came to the Royal Karnak to escape. But not in quite the same way as most other guests who are relaxing at this hotel on the banks of the Nile. Maggie, a compulsive fixer of other people’s lives, may have found herself in hot water at her last hotel in Switzerland and just might have needed to get out of there fast. But here at the Royal Karnak, under the hot Saharan sun, she has a comfortable suite, a loyal confidante in the hotel manager, Ahmed, and a handful of sympathetic friends. One morning, however, Maggie notices a new arrival at check-in.

No No No

I will never endorse a book that sacrifices innocent animals for the whims of two main figures in a book, who, by the way, are vile human beings. There is *nothing* to mitigate the horrid nature of the two fighting parties in this novel, an elderly woman and an eight-year-old boy. Not worth the time to read this.

But when a recent homicide is connected to Alku’s unsolved mass murder, he and cold case agent Evangeline Reed have no choice but to investigate.

I hope this terrific novel is the first of many in the new series. My only complaint is that it was a bit heavy on the flashbacks, but that seems to be the case with all suspense/mystery novels these days. Still, a great read!

Story
In a tale inspired by real events, pregnant journalist Joan Harken is cautiously excited to follow her fiancé back to his Minnesota hometown. After spending a childhood on the move and chasing the screams and swirls of news-rich city life, she’s eager to settle down. Lilydale’s motto, “Come Home Forever,” couldn’t be more inviting. And yet, something is off in the picture-perfect village. The friendliness borders on intrusive. Joan can’t shake the feeling that every move she makes is being tracked. An archaic organization still seems to hold the town in thrall.

First, I loved The Quarry Girls by this author, so to be fair, I was hoping for something along those lines. This started out good, if a bit slow, but then got too far-fetched for me. (At least I hope it’s far-fetched!)

It’s Okay to Give This One a Miss
Reviewed: 09-13-24
I’m usually up for a Murder, She Wrote book - even the ones that feel like an 8 hour Grady and Frank recess. But this book bored me to tears. No familiar characters, and the unfamiliar ones are soooo dull. No reason for Jessica to become involved. Just endless hours of asking myself “isn’t it time to go home to Cabot Cove yet?” Don’t feel guilty if you skip this one in the series altogether!

Not For Me
Reviewed: 06-29-24
I’m normally a big fan of Lucy Foley, so I was excited for this one to come out. Perhaps just a matter of taste, but this is my least favorite by this author. I’d classify it as *maybe* suspense with some supernatural overtones. But even calling it suspenseful seems a bit deceiving. It isn’t scary, it’s most definitely not a whodunnit as there is no primary murder to solve until far, far along in the plot. It might be considered a coming-of-age book with some light suspense thrown in. That seems like a pretty close description. Lots of readers will like it - just not up my alley. I’ll anxiously await her next book.

Natalka and Edwin are perfect if improbable partners in a detective agency. At eighty-four, Edwin regularly claims that he’s the oldest detective in England. He is a master at surveillance, deploying his age as a cloak of invisibility. Natalka, Ukrainian-born and more than fifty years his junior, is a math whizz, who takes any cases concerning fraud or deception. Despite a steady stream of minor cases, Natalka is frustrated. She loves a murder, as she’s fond of saying, and none have come the agency’s way. That is until local writer Melody Chambers dies.

More Harbinder, Please!
Reviewed: 06-16-24
As enjoyable as this book was, I so miss the focus on Harbinder and her lovely, humorous parents. With the recent books in this series, Harbinder has become a minor character, and the series, while still good, is so similar to others that it hardly stands out from the crowd.
For anyone who hasn’t read the first and second installments in this series, treat yourself. You won’t be disappointed!

Some of the voices were irritating
Reviewed: 03-16-24
This was not one of my favorites of Dame Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple novels to begin with, but the irritating voices chosen for a number of the characters in the audio version are awful to listen to. I love other narrations by Emilia Fox, but for some reason the screeching of some of the female characters in this audiobook make it nearly impossible to enjoy. As far as the plot, it is fine - just don’t expect it to be one of Christie’s best.
