Confusing
Reviewed: 11-05-09
I had a hard time with this story. At one point, I had several pages of notes trying to keep all the characters and their relationships to each other straight. I finally gave up. Then I thought I must have listened to it out of order, since it skips around. I wanted to get the story, but this would be better if you also had the hard copy to refer back to.

I loved The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, and the sequel, The Girl Who Played With Fire was worth the wait. I was sad to hear of Stieg Larsson's death, as he was a gifted writer. I wish there were more stories, as I love the heroine.

In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women—mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends—view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don't.

I loved "The Help". It made me laugh, it made me cry. The author paints such vivid pictures of the characters, and the readers do a great job. I was immersed in the story - I couldn't put it down, and I didn't want it to end. I highly recommend!

I just wasted 9 hours listening to this audiobook hoping it would have a point. How anyone rated it 5 stars is beyond me. The story had no point and was filled with sailing jargon in GREAT detail. I do not recommend it.

Loved this book! It held my interest to the end - I invented places to go so I could listen while I drove, and many times I sat at my destination not wanting to get out of my car. I was slightly disappointed in the ending, and hope subsequent stories by Steig Larson bring back the same characters. It is too bad he has passed away.

Story
Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

Story
In this incandescent novel, V.S. Naipaul takes us deeply into the life of one man, an Indian who, uprooted by the bloody tides of Third World history, has come to live in an isolated town at the bend of a great river in a newly independent African nation. Naipaul gives us the most convincing and disturbing vision yet of what happens in a place caught between the dangerously alluring modern world and its own tenacious past and traditions.

Story
In a rich and riveting narrative, Jane Dunn reveals the extraordinary rivalry between the regal cousins. It is the story of two queens ruling on one island, each with a claim to the throne of England, each embodying dramatically opposing qualities of character, ideals of womanliness (and views of sexuality), and divinely ordained kingship.

Disappointing
Reviewed: 04-25-05
The audio version of the book was hard to follow. It was long and tedious, and kept jumping around in history. I listened to over 7 hrs and couldn't finish it. The reader did a nice job with accents and quotes, but read so fast it was hard to find a spot to stop the book at the end of a sentence. Although if she hadn't read so fast, the book would have been even longer and more unsufferable.
