Story
Imagine if you made one little mistake when you were young and were punished for it for the rest of your life. Well, that’s what happened to Lydia (yes, that Lydia, the youngest Bennet sister from Pride and Prejudice), and she’s here to set the record straight. Hold on to your teacups and get ready for sophisticated (and a little bit naughty) hot takes and witty banter that’ll make you laugh—and think. We meet Lydia just as she is denounced by her family, exiled miles from home, and married to the rogue George Wickham, who seems to love all women...except his own wife.

Who chose rock music as an accompaniment to this story? The voices and story were enjoyable but every time the music came on I wished I could turn it off.

Bad Narration/ Convoluted story
Reviewed: 10-30-23
The narration eventually got to me so much that I considered stopping. Only the actual mystery kept me going. Obviously written by a man, there’s an incredible amount of titalating detail about women’s bodies and clothing, when attractive and skimpy. The story is as described and keeps one involved. in the end, it’s pretty unbelievable.

Terrible Narration

The story was gripping, though it went on over long. Because it was dragged out, it became clear that there must be a turnaround and the initial expectations couldn’t be true.
The narration was- overall- not great, but the reader for Kate sounded like a 15 year old “Valley Girl “. Annoying beyond belief.

** spoiler alert ** First, let me say how much I enjoyed this book. I grew up in Michigan during the 1960s and am familiar with many of the places and events. I found the story interesting and easy to follow despite the fact that it goes back and forth between three different time periods. I would recommend it.
Now for my gripes. I “read “this in audio form and while listeners not from the Detroit area might not be bothered, one pronunciation almost had me crazy. The reader (narrator character) is a young woman who works for one of the two primary Detroit papers: The Detroit Free Press. That is pronounced “ FREE Press”, not “free press” which to me is a generic term referring to the all newspapers which are free to publish what they want. The “Detroit FREE Press” is the title which refers to the specific newspaper published in the city of Detroit. Yes, I know. Picky, picky, but no Detroiter would ever pronounce it that way and unfortunately she says it a lot because she worked there. My other little gripe is that the three primary female characters -all of whom are Caucasian- fall in love with Negro men. Please be clear- I don’t object to interracial relationships in general or these in particular, but just find it a bit odd that all of the women fall for black men. In fact, as I think back, most of the white men are presented in a negative light. Of the three women, the only one who seems to really have anything in common with her love is the one from the 1860s. Nothing wrong with the other men. They’re all admirable people, but the inherent difficulties of an interracial relationship would make the later relationships problematic and, for women brought up in white environments, probably not a first choice. Some of this is discussed, especially for the 1960s relationship, but I still find it not really realistic.

Story
Think you have a good memory? Think again. Memories are our most cherished possessions. We rely on them every day of our lives. They make us who we are. And yet the truth is they are far from being the accurate record of the past we like to think they are. True, we can all admit to having suffered occasional memory lapses, such as entering a room and immediately forgetting why or suddenly being unable to recall the name of someone we've met dozens of times. But what if we have the potential for more profound errors of memory?

** spoiler alert ** I keep wanting to like Patterson's books, but they don't cut it for me. I never really like the characters. While there isn't anything sexist about his female characters they just don't ring true.
In this book we have four primary and two secondary female characters. The main female cop is friends with the medical examiner and I can accept them discussing a case, but is the cop really going to befriend a rookie reporter because she discovers her crying in the loo? And then introduce her to the m.e. and give the reporter private cop details of a case? And call themselves the "Women's Murder Club "? Then bring in a female district attorney and they all sit around in bars and coffee shops discussing the details of a case? I can't accept it. Interesting twist at the end but it's sprung pretty much out of nowhere. Then there's the tragic health crisis and cop shooting. It's all too much for me.

** spoiler alert ** Wow- I thought this book would be much more formulaic and predictable. Here we have an ordinary looking woman in her early 30s with responsibility for her mentally handicapped sister, Millie. The woman, Grace, has a good job but no real love life. As soon- or shortly after- she tells a man about her sister, they move along. Then she meets Jack at a concert in the park, where he asks Millie to dance, earning Grace's gratitude. Jack is drop dead, movie star gorgeous. They begin doing things together with Millie and within three months, Jack is asking to meet Grace's parents and proposing. It all seems a bit quick, but Grace feels she would be foolish to give up the chance, just to get to know Jack better.
After the wedding there are some odd things, which escalate.
The story is told in present and in flashbacks and the reader sees what is happening long before Grace or others because of this. The book is well written, with lots of detail. On finishing, I tried to look back and see if I or Grace would have seen what was coming. I really didn't see a lot of warning signs, except perhaps the speed of the courtship. Millie was a great character who added another dimension to the story. Overall, I found it intense but believable.
