Story
In the most ambitious one-volume American history in decades, award-winning historian Jill Lepore offers a magisterial account of the origins and rise of a divided nation. In riveting prose, These Truths tells the story of America, beginning in 1492, to ask whether the course of events has proven the nation's founding truths or belied them.

Read the book

Ms. Lepore should stick to writing, which she does very well. Her reading makes the content so difficult to follow that I had to give up,; and I ordered the Kindle version. She reads too rapidly, especially when she is attempting to signal quoted material, and her voice drops in pitch and volume to the point of inaudibility at the ends of many sentences. I'm surprised that Recorded Books released such a poorly performed audio book. I suggest that it be redone by a professional.

A Great American Novel
Reviewed: 10-10-17
This is a beautifully written tale given a pitch perfect rendering by Lloyd James (i.e., Sean Pratt). Sure, at times the myth-making is over the top, and the frequent rhetorical questions could have been cut by half. But once you become comfortable with the structuring of the narrative, you are in for forty-plus hours of a heartbreaking yet uplifting story.

The Pillars of the Earth tells the story of Philip, prior of Kingsbridge, a devout and resourceful monk driven to build the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has known...of Tom, the mason who becomes his architect - a man divided in his soul...of the beautiful, elusive Lady Aliena, haunted by a secret shame...and of a struggle between good and evil that will turn church against state, and brother against brother.

Downton Abby of the Middle Ages
Reviewed: 03-07-13
If you like coincidence piled upon coincidence, continual crises and apparent resolutions, characters clearly sympathetic or not, a heavy dose of explicitly described sex, and a long, long tale, then "Pillars" is for you. Follett's prose is smooth and filled with good descriptive detail. Part of the length comes from excessive back filling with information that we already know. As Follett acknowledges in his "Foreword," he writes "entertainments."
It does get addictive. However,I think I'll not jump into the sequel for awhile.

Story
Awe and exhilaration—along with heartbreak and mordant wit—abound in Lolita, which tells the story of the aging Humbert Humbert's obsession for the nymphet Dolores Haze. Lolita is also the story of a hypercivilized European colliding with the cheerful barbarism of postwar America.

Repulsive Story; Dazzling Prose

This is the first Nabokov I have "read." He creates his protagonist in rich, elegant writing that almost makes you feel guilty for enjoying it in spite of the content. Irons' narration is excellent.
