Couldn't get past the narrator's monotone voice

I love Dean Koontz and was excited to experience another of his stories. Unfortunately, I could not remain focused on the audiobook as the moment I didn't force myself to pay attention, the monotone nature caused me to lose track of which character the story was focused on. After a few attempts to listen in different environments, I had to return for a title with a more engaging narrator. I'm disappointed as I've not encountered this issue with Koontz novels before.

Stephen Fry is brilliant in his performance. I enjoy the way he brings Douglas Adams’s characters to life so much that this is one of the very few books I have listened to multiple times.

I have been a fan of Jonathan Kellerman for decades. I have read or listened to everything he has written and even read a lot of his wife’s work. The first few chapters of this book must be written by his son as it was tedious to listen to. The “he said,” “she said,” before people spoke with no variance of the phrasing reminded me short stories written by grade schoolers. I had to stop listening after the story nor the dialogue improved. I really wanted to like this.

The story pulled me in very quickly and I finished it very quickly. I disagree with those that found it completely implausible. Mob mentality is real and ca be horrific. The story is meant to be a fascinating anomaly & it reads as one. I am glad I didn’t let the bad reviews dissuade me from forming my own opinion. The only voice that sounded over-the-top, was only a slight exaggeration from a few younger people that I can think of.

Hearing first-hand accounts makes this an amazing listen. They were only a few times that you are unclear who is speaking. Typically, the speaker is announced or is part of an ongoing conversation. While the flow of the book makes sense, there are a few moments that I wondered why we were jumping back in the timeline. I am not a professional, but I wondered if the topic could have been addressed previously. Overall, I felt compelled to rewatch Fury Road halfway through listening.

Amazing cast. Time flew by as the episodes kept me entertained as I did usually monotonous tasks. Highly recommend!
