Story
When we seek an example of great leaders with unalloyed courage, the person who comes to mind is Winston Churchill: the iconic, visionary war leader immune from the consensus of the day, who stood firmly for his beliefs when everyone doubted him. But how did young Winston become Churchill? What gave him the strength to take on the superior force of Nazi Germany when bombs rained on London and so many others had caved? In this landmark biography of Winston Churchill based on extensive new material, the true genius of the man, statesman, and leader can finally be fully understood.

Story
The first volume of Selected by Extraterrestrials took the life of Bill Tompkins up to 1970 and did not go deeply into the super-secret briefings he attended by Navy spies reporting on what was going on in Nazi Germany from 1942-1945. In this second volume of his ground-breaking memoirs, we learn those details and more about his subsequent aerospace career at companies that included TRW. Here is a record of words that Bill Tompkins wrote about his life until his death in 2017.

Story
On November 20, 1943, in the first trial by fire of America’s fledgling amphibious assault doctrine, 5,000 men stormed the beaches of Tarawa, a seemingly invincible Japanese island fortress barely the size of the 300-acre Pentagon parking lots. Before the first day ended, one-third of the marines who had crossed Tarawa’s deadly reef under murderous fire were killed, wounded, or missing. In three days of fighting, four Americans would win the Medal of Honor and six thousand combatants would die.

Reading this very astute account of Tarawa leaves no doubt the assault was a necessary and important step in the Central Pacific campaign. I do wonder why a biographer has not dove into the story of Col. Mike Edson and his important USMC career.

Story
The Los Angeles Air Raid on February 24/25, 1942 opened an unprecedented chapter in the evolution of the US Navy. In response to this incident, a covert research program to investigate the feasibility of exotic antigravity propulsion technologies was developed. In addition, navy operatives were embedded in Nazi-occupied Europe to learn about the Germans’ advanced flying saucer programs, and they discovered the Nazis were receiving assistance from two extraterrestrial groups with very different agendas.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Story
Jared Kushner was one of the most consequential presidential advisers in modern history. For the first time, he recounts what happened behind closed doors during the Trump presidency. Few White House advisors have had such an expansive portfolio or constant access to the president. From his office next to Trump, senior adviser Jared Kushner operated quietly behind the scenes, preferring to leave the turf wars and television sparring to others.

Jared is one of those rare people who has a clear eyed view of reality and therefore able to honestly describe events exactly as they occurred. This is invaluable to the reader. Furthermore he is humble and always giving credit to others who deserve it. Recommend to this book to any history buff who seeks truth about events as they actually happened.

His daring and resolve as a general gained the attention of President Lincoln, then desperate for bold leadership. Lincoln appointed Grant as Lieutenant General of the Union Army in March 1864. Within a year, Grant’s forces had seized Richmond and forced Robert E. Lee to surrender.

Keep writing Bret. Your books dig down into “the rest of the story” which large biographies don’t do well. Also you are meticulous about getting the facts and not clouding the story with opinion. You let the reader draw their own conclusions. (Priceless!)

Story
"Ants are the most warlike of all animals, with colony pitted against colony.... Their clashes dwarf Waterloo and Gettysburg", writes Edward O. Wilson in his most finely observed work in decades. In a myrmecological tour to such far-flung destinations as Mozambique and New Guinea, the Gulf of Mexico's Dauphin Island and even his parents' overgrown yard back in Alabama, Wilson thrillingly evokes his nine-decade-long scientific obsession with more than 15,000 ant species.

Story
From the first moments of his presidency, Donald J. Trump put US economic revival at the top of his agenda. Cutting red tape and slashing business tax rates made companies eager to locate in America again. A surge in corporate investment led to record numbers of US job openings. But there was also another force at work at the start of the Trump era, and it’s impossible to provide a fair accounting of Trump’s governance without noting the unique obstacles he’s faced.

This is a outstanding book by someone who cares deeply about our country. She succinctly presents the success of the recent Trump economic program and contrasts that with the proposed progressive agenda. I recommend this book to anyone not sure of the right path for the country. Also if one wants to understand the issues of the day, presented factually without political bias, watch or record “Maria in The Morning” you won’t be disappointed. Jim
