It's what I love about outstanding historical fiction. Memorable characters set in a fictional incident during the siege of Leningrad.

Not much makes me cry these days. But this memoir of a little undocumented girl finally emerging from decades of living in fear of the knock on the door or the inquisitive official or vindictive acquaintance that would result in deportation moved me to tears. Fine narration by the author.

A fantasy historical novel with the emphasis on fantasy. The history comes in the setting in China just before the fall of the last Dowager Empress? It draws on the atmosphere and mythology prevalent in China at the time. The story is told through the eyes of a winsome and sympathetic female fox.

Not sure I believe the bank robber as a considerate, thoughtful lover, but a great listen all the same.

I listened to the last chapter 3 times. along with the major adventure where Rivers father makes another appearance, the book concludes the BND's attempt to put an agent in MI5.

but I'm not entirely sure. Gerald Doyle is a crackling good narrator.

Diana Taverner's smile at the end is a nice touch.

Jackson Lamb at his best which means his worst and there's lots of action and several dead bodies.

If a hero can be constructed through an atmosphere thick with farts, cigarette smoke and booze then Jackson Lamb is that hero.

But wonderful anyway. You can see why Elmore Leonard's advice to writers is: "if it sounds like a book, rewrite it."
