Like every other hobbit, Bilbo Baggins likes nothing better than a quiet evening in his snug hole in the ground, dining on a sumptuous dinner in front of a fire. But when a wandering wizard captivates him with tales of the unknown, Bilbo becomes restless. Soon he joins the wizard’s band of homeless dwarves in search of giant spiders, savage wolves, and other dangers. Bilbo quickly tires of the quest for adventure and longs for the security of his familiar home. But before he can return to his life of comfort, he must face the greatest threat of all.

Nattator made this all worthwhile for me
Reviewed: 08-18-23
I have waited a long time to read this. Bought the audio more than a few years ago because I knew I needed to hear it rather than read it and then kept postponing it. The story was much, much more enjoyable than I had believed it would be and Rob Inglis' performance made it even more so. Thank you, sir.

More bodies have washed up on the shores of a small island. Another overfilled, ill-equipped, dilapidated ship has sunk under the weight of its too many passengers: Syrians, Ethiopians, Egyptians, Lebanese, Palestinians, all of them desperate to escape untenable lives back in their homelands. But miraculously, someone has survived the passage: nine-year-old Amir, a Syrian boy who is soon rescued by Vänna. Vänna.

From the written word to the wonderful narration this is an important and beautiful story. The only time I wished I had the book was at the ending. Sometimes I need to read the endings again.

Story
At one point or another, we’ve all been asked to name five people, living or dead, with whom we’d like to have dinner. Why do we choose the people we do? And what if that dinner was to actually happen? These are the questions Rebecca Serle contends with in The Dinner List. When Sabrina arrives at her 30th birthday dinner she finds at the table not just her best friend, but also three significant people from her past, and well, Audrey Hepburn. As the dinner table conversation begins, it becomes clear that there’s a reason these six people have been gathered together.

I am switching to the book
Reviewed: 10-09-21
I really don't like leaving bad reviews. Any effort put forth by an author is still more effort than I have done. But I had to on this one. The premise of the story is interesting and under different conditions (i.e. reading the paperback) would likely be enjoyable. I'm hoping. I just bought it. But the narration on this one killed it for me. The narrator sounds whiny and petulant and flat. I think this could have been much better with a different narrator.

There's been a spot of bother: The treasurer has absconded with the club's funds and several prized birds. Brilliant - even when I didn't always agree
Reviewed: 08-17-18
This book created a seesaw of emotions in me. I started by giving it 4 stars and then determined I needed to give it 5 because of that seesaw - it made me chuckle, it made me mad, it made me cry, it made me think! The premise of the set of essays was brilliant really. I appreciated that she put a name to my brand of feminism ("Bad Feminist"). I loved how she spoke not so much of the hardened myth of "the feminist" but the overall treatment of women as a whole - by men, by themselves, by other women, by society, and so cruelly last year and this by politicians, in the context of books that she has read or movies she has seen. She also taught me something in her essays regarding race and my perceptions. Something I need to always keep with me. I highly recommend this book. Not to read just once but to read multiple times.
Bahni Turpin excellently narrated the audio.

Reading this three months before my planned retirement was not quite effective enough. But it did make me understand those things that I have done incorrectly (and correctly) over the years. And it certainly made me appreciate those young women who work for/with me for whom I hope things improve.

I never made it past Chapter 1, which was a very descriptive and very long hour of detailed analysis of the book. It was the equivalent of reading Cliff Notes and by the time the hour ended I could not decide if it were a case of not needing to listen to the next 20 hours or not wanting to. So I returned it.
