Story
Parking, quite literally, has a death grip on America: each year a handful of Americans are tragically killed by their fellow citizens over parking spots. But even when we don’t resort to violence, we routinely do ridiculous things for parking, contorting our professional, social, and financial lives to get a spot. Indeed, in the century since the advent of the car, we have deformed—and in some cases demolished—our homes and our cities in a Sisyphean quest for cheap and convenient car storage.

Elucidating AND entertaining!

I am passionate about public spaces and urban planning, so after hearing a story from this book on the brilliant podcast Cautionary Tales, I was eager to read the whole thing. It was everything I'd hoped for!! It's hard to define just how captivating, relevant, and *fun* this book is -- because yes, it is about parking of all things, and most of us would prefer never to think about parking again. But it's also about people: the kind of world we want to live in vs. the one we actually create, and our very real power to change it. With its brilliant composition, excellent narration, and under-studied yet massively impactful subject matter, Paved Paradise is by all means a worthy listen.

Story
Joe Tournier has a bad case of amnesia. His first memory is of stepping off a train in the 19th-century French colony of England. The only clue Joe has about his identity is a century-old postcard of a Scottish lighthouse that arrives in London the same month he does. Written in illegal English - instead of French - the postcard is signed only with the letter 'M', but Joe is certain whoever wrote it knows him far better than he currently knows himself and he’s determined to find the writer.

This is the cutest little story I've ever seen. The author does a wonderful job reading it and the voices are adorable. I'm an adult and I got emotional about it. This story is for anyone who's still a little kid at heart.

Story
In 1986, 26-year-old Ruth is visiting a friend at the hospital when she notices that the door to one of the hospital rooms is painted red. She witnesses nurses drawing straws to see who will tend to the patient inside, all of them reluctant to enter the room. Out of impulse, Ruth herself enters the quarantined space and immediately begins to care for the young man who cries for his mother in the last moments of his life. Before she can even process what she’s done, word spreads in the community that Ruth is the only person willing to help these young men afflicted by AIDS.

This book is profoundly moving and beautifully written. It's especially wonderful to hear it in Ruth's own voice. I found it such an honor and a privilege to hear her story and the stories of the people she helped. This book made me reassess how much is possible when it comes to kindness, reminded me of the goodness in people, and taught me so much about what it was like to life with AIDS during the epidemic. It's such important history, and I'm so glad these stories won't be forgotten. I will certainly carry them with me. If you're even slightly interested in this story, do not hesitate to give it a read.
