Story
Until about 1800, the West and the Islamic realm were like two adjacent, parallel universes, each assuming itself to be the center of the world while ignoring the other. As Europeans colonized the globe, the two world histories intersected and the Western narrative drove the other one under. The West hardly noticed, but the Islamic world found the encounter profoundly disrupting.

Ansary is not only a brilliant historian , sociologist, philosopher, anthropologist all in one, but is also a gifted story teller.By that I believe he is telling a story of how different societies developed and became these complex and yet bonded civilizations. Our guiding principles in life can be different and yet similar around the globe. One may never truly understand the other, but to be able to understand that concept is truly important. The richness in detail and fullness of perspective is mind boggling. I feel like a little child being read to by the greatest storyteller of all time. And the vivid images of events are an adventure!

Inspiring messages concerning the art of modern parenting.
Reviewed: 06-17-22
I would suggest that this is a must read not only for parents, but for anyone curious about how certain individuals can take the World by storm, using imagination and putting their dreams into action.
The author, who happens to be a fabulous narrator, articulates conclusions drawn ,after interviewing entrepreneurs as well as their parents from around the World. These fascinating accounts filled with valuable life lessons, are compelling as well as entertaining. A clear distinction between successful individuals and the entrepreneur become apparent, as there are unique yet basic mindsets stemming from the childhood experience. This is where a kind of minimal parental guidance comes in to play. Children are given choices, freedom, and responsibilities. They are nurtured as opposed to being coddled. They are encouraged to follow passions, to work through and grow from adversity, to be creative, to travel, and to work or volunteer within diverse populations. This brings out a sense of confidence as children are given credibility and know that they are trusted as well as respected. Even in households where tradition and religious doctrine are practiced , children continue to develop creative behavioral strengths that supersede perceived limitations or challenges.
Through these interviews, I have come to recognize the common denominators of how these parents contributed to the success of their children. Woven in to the spectrum of social institutions are these important messages.
I am truly inspired by this book. Raising a mentally healthy, happy, loving, resilient, creative, driven, compassionate and socially responsible individual can only make this world a better place. It might even save our planet!

Insider perspectives on making things happen
Reviewed: 05-08-22
This is a story of how of four young men , who are bored with predictability and academia’s routine orientation , find each other and put together ideas that are way beyond their wildest dreams . Like a rolling stone gaining momentum and gathering information , they have to rise to each occasion as it presents, and together they must quickly resolve predicaments . Putting your money where your mouth is it’s not an easy thing and when you don’t have it and you somehow have to borrow it or come up with sponsors. But the gift of gab and saying the right thing at the right time is where it all comes together.
This is an exciting journey of relentless energy, yet the reading maintains a cool ,calm ,and collected narration laced with humor . I laughed continuously. It’s a real life story . You can’t make this stuff up !

In Origins, Frank H. T. Rhodes explores the origin and evolution of living things, the changing environments in which they have developed, and the challenges we now face on an increasingly crowded and polluted planet. Rhodes argues that the future well-being of our burgeoning population depends in no small part on our understanding of life's past, its long and slow development, and its intricate interdependencies.

This presentation of origins of life on our planet is beautifully organized. I was surprised by how much I was able to grasp about the coming and going of species over millions of years. The concept of cause and effect is more clear to me. Scientists along with their contributions were discussed throughout the text. The study of fossils is the book of our past.
I am so thrilled to see such progress in these sciences since my first anthropology class in 1972.
I recommend this book to anyone who is truth seeking, and finds discovery fascinating. I find comfort in being a part of it all . If only we as humans could minimize causes of climate change , and respect creatures and their habitats. Wendy Summers

Story
This is the first volume in a bold new series that tells the stories of all peoples, connecting historical events from Europe to the Middle East to the far coast of China, while still giving weight to the characteristics of each country. Susan Wise Bauer provides both sweeping scope and vivid attention to the individual lives that give flesh to abstract assertions about human history. This narrative history employs the methods of "history from beneath" - literature, epic traditions, private letters, and accounts - to connect kings and leaders with the lives of those they ruled.

Fact or fiction?

The text is beautifully written. The organization of material is also an original and interesting approach. There is great detail and information about kings along with their successors. The author explains her approach to this presentation.
I have difficulty knowing where Bible and mythology begins and ends as it is threaded throughout the history. One can look at it this way. Civilization of ancient times thrived upon mythology and biblical teachings. But as we read this from our 21 st century perspective, some of us expect history to be based on facts based on evidence . There is no evidence for some of these stories. I enjoyed hearing the stories, but would like there to be more clarity on sources of information ,such as prefacing with phrases eg. ‘ according to Exodus, according to Homer , or as depicted by ancient artifacts etc. ‘
Present information in such a way that it is clear as to what happened and when , as well as what people believed happened in ancient times .
