Great "read". Hard to get out of the car!
Reviewed: 03-19-19
Like with some other great writers, I find myself sitting in the driveway, listening. I go thru about a book a week, sometimes 2 a week. This book was excellent. Loved the story line. A little dark, but better than I expected, reading the other reviews. I am, however, a hockey fan, and knowing how the game is played certainly makes it easier to follow. I enjoyed it so much that I put the next one from Bryan into my list instead of a new book by a favorite author. Great first book.

Story
On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge.

Larry McMurtry's American epic, set in the late 19th century, tells the story of a cattle drive from Texas to Montana, a drive that represents not only a daring foolhardy adventure, but a part of the American Dream for everyone involved.

Best audio book I have ever listened to!

The quality of the reading is just horrible!
Reviewed: 09-20-13
Is there anything you would change about this book?
It really needs a different performer. Every sentence starts reasonably loud, and then trails off to a whisper. It makes it VERY hard to listen to. I'm a regular audio book "reader", and this one is almost unbearable. If Lee Horsley narrates another book, I'm not listening to it.
If you’ve listened to books by Larry McMurtry before, how does this one compare?
n/a
What didn’t you like about Lee Horsley’s performance?
See the above. The volume of his reading trails off to inaudible. I've tried listening many different ways, earbuds, speakers, car audio. All the same. Ugh. I'm at chapter 9, and not sure I can continue.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Yes
Any additional comments?
That's about it. I'm not sure I can continue.

Story
Welcome to the fabled Gold Coast, that stretch on the North Shore of Long Island that once held the greatest concentration of wealth and power in America. Here two men are destined for an explosive collision: John Sutter, Wall Street lawyer, holding fast to a fading aristocratic legacy; and Frank Bellarosa, the Mafia don who seizes his piece of the staid and unprepared Gold Coast like a latter-day barbarian chief and draws Sutter and his regally beautiful wife, Susan, into his violent world.

Wow. What a great introduction to DeMille
Reviewed: 07-21-11
My wife's favorite author, so I tried this one, at her suggestion. The ONLY complaint I have is that we are also listening to another DeMille that has a spoiler in it, for this book. So, I kind of knew how it would end. Still, a fun "read".

To the reviewer that wrote about "jogging in the nude", you really didn't read/listen to the book, did you? 'Cause you got that wrong. This book was very entertaining, and a great sequel to Gold Coast. Some stretches here and there? Sure. It's a STORY.
