Story
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

Wonderful cast

I never thought I would like this book. It was terrific! I don’t like full cast books. But they were all so talented, I can’t imagine it any other way.

Story
A seemingly straightforward private case turns out to be much more complicated - and sinister - than Special Agent A. X. L. Pendergast ever could have anticipated. Pendergast, together with his ward, Constance Greene, travels to the quaint seaside village of Exmouth, Massachusetts, to investigate the theft of a priceless wine collection. But inside the wine cellar, they find something considerably more disturbing: a bricked-up niche that once held a crumbling skeleton.

Annoyingly gruesome, even for Pendergast

Slight spoilers…
the details on the killings got a little old. Gruesome description with Pendergast books is to be expected. But one after the other. Details. On and on. So many I almost gave up.

The town of Paradise receives a tragic shock when the mayor is discovered dead, his body lying in a shallow grave on a property on the lake. It's ostensibly suicide, but Jesse's has his doubts...especially because the piece of land where the man was found is the subject of a contentious and dodgy land deal.

I really wanted to like it, mostly because I like Tom Selleck’s portrayal of Jessie Stone in the movies. This isn’t the first Parker book I’ve read, and his writing style-super short Dr Seuss sentences and “he said. She said. He said” is very annoying. Kuddos to the “new” author for keeping *that* authentic(eye roll here). I was finally just waiting for it to end.

Dislike new narrator
Reviewed: 12-29-21
I may not finish this book because of the narration. I loved Rene aberjonios(sp?). He was why I listened instead of read. I realize a new narrator is needed, and fans will be hard to please. But now, I can’t even tell all the southern characters apart, and Constance has a whiny nasally annoying voice that is nothing like her character. I don’t think I can take it. It gets four stars because I’m sure the story will be good, as always.

Story
The most gorgeously theatrical of all Dickens's novels, Nicholas Nickleby follows the delightful adventures of a hearty young hero in 19th-century England. Nicholas, a gentleman's son fallen upon hard times, must set out to make his way in the world. His journey is accompanied by some of the most swaggering scoundrels and unforgettable eccentrics in Dickens's pantheon.
