Story
Grady Adams lives a simple, solitary life deep in the Colorado mountains. Here the 35-year-old carpenter works out of a converted barn, crafting exquisite one-of-a-kind furniture. There's little about this strong yet gentle man to suggest the experiences that have alienated him from the contemporary world. But that is about to change.

Not his best work
Reviewed: 12-22-24
Suspenseful story but the premise is flawed. Koontz has decided that evolution and natural selection are no longer a thing because of ‘math’. Creatures can come fully formed from the ethereal realm. Way, way too much woo woo for me. I did a lot of eye rolling in the last quarter of the book as it descended into some pretty treacly moments. Poisoned the whole story for me. This book is far below ‘The Watchers’ and the Jane Hawk series, to give a couple examples of his better work.

A great paranormal story from Joel Shepherd
Reviewed: 12-15-23
In a welcome change of pace from hard sci-fi, Joel Shepherd delivers an excellent blend of the paranormal with a YA bent. Characterization and world building were first rate as with any other novel he has authored. With plot twists and turns plus kinetic action sequences the book kept me on edge until the end. The narrator did a fantastic job and her excellent Italian accent made for great listening. I have the sequel queued up and can’t wait to hear what happens.

Story
A decade ago, Emily Carlino vanished after her car broke down on a California highway. She was presumed to be one of serial killer Ronny Lee Jessup’s victims whose remains were never found. Writer David Thorne still hasn’t recovered from losing the love of his life, or from the guilt of not being there to save her. Then David meets Maddison Sutton, beguiling, playful, and keenly aware of all David has lost. But what really takes his breath away is that everything about Maddison, down to her kisses, is just like Emily.

Great story with an excellent narration
Reviewed: 11-17-22
Koontz doesn’t stray far from his sci-fi roots in this atmospheric and suspenseful tale of an author’s long lost love and a seemingly impossible doppelgänger. The narration is excellent.

Story
Irresistibly drawn to mysteries, if only to debunk them, reporter Lionel Page exposes supernatural frauds, swindlers, and charlatans. His latest case is an obsession—at least for an ancient and wealthy heiress: verify the authenticity of a lost Edgar Allan Poe manuscript circulating through New York City’s literary underworld. But the shrewd Regina Dunkle offers more than money. It’s a pact. Fulfill her request, and Lionel’s own notorious buried past, one he’s been running from since he was a child, will remain hidden.

The book was excellent in every way and the narration was superb. I was sad when the book ended but not because of the ending.
