Story
When a body is found stuffed into a barrel at a garbage dump, covered in long red lacerations, Detective Jenna Alton and her new deputy, David Kane, rush to the scene. Nothing ever happens in the small American town of Black Rock Falls, so Jenna believes the victim must be one of two recent missing persons, and she fears for the life of the other. Both were strangers to the town, but there's nothing else to link them. Jenna knows someone must have seen something, but no one's talking.

A Disappointing Plot
Reviewed: 05-23-24
I could have ignored the cliches and the gratuitous violence, though to have done so would have been exhausting, but the ending left me feeling I had merely been had. I don’t mind being surprised by who the villain turns out to be, as long as there were clues that cause a face-palm or two. But the resolution of this one only occasioned a “What? Really?” There was no foreshadowing, no missed clues, just a “devil ex machina.”

Story
Once in a blue moon, a book comes along that changes the world. The Origin of Species. War and Peace. 1984. And now, Cunk on Everything: The Encyclopedia Philomena, by Philomena Cunk. Philomena Cunk is one of the greatest thinkers of the 21st century, and in Cunk on Everything she turns her attention to our biggest issue: why are there so many books? Wouldn't it be better if there was just one? This is that book—an encyclopedia of all human knowledge, delving into not only life's greatest mysteries but our most important political figures and cultural touchstones.

because there are lots of references to British celebrities. Still plenty funny, though. I laughed a lot.

I was distracted from these stories by only one thing—the joy of listening to some of the finest prose I’ve ever experienced. These are stories to be heard at least twice, and art from which we all can hope to learn.

Until Now, I Had Not Deleted an Audible Book Half-way Through
Reviewed: 07-05-21
This has it all: The protagonist FBI agent with a collapsing domestic relationship, a tragic loss in her past, a partner in the ICU, a serial killer responsible for the tragic loss, an intrepid reporter, his gravel-voiced editor, teasing letters from the killer…and the overwhelming sense that nothing is going to redeem this collection of cliches. If I’d been reading rather than listening, I’d have quit after a couple of chapters.
