Story
The crime-infested intersection of West Fayette and Monroe Streets is well-known - and cautiously avoided - by most of Baltimore. But this notorious corner's 24-hour open-air drug market provides the economic fuel for a dying neighborhood. David Simon, an award-winning author and crime reporter, and Edward Burns, a 20-year veteran of the urban drug war, tell the chilling story of this desolate crossroad.

While listening to this book I kept thinking the author had the have experience with drug addiction, not knowing that he was following the characters around for the book. As someone who battled drug addiction and won by surrendering, this book really hit home with me. In my opinion, only someone who has been there could truly understand. Great book that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Story
When Michael K. Williams died on September 6, 2021, he left behind a career as one of the most electrifying actors of his generation. From his star turn as Omar Little in The Wire to Chalky White in Boardwalk Empire to Emmy-nominated roles in HBO’s The Night Of and Lovecraft Country, Williams inhabited a slew of indelible roles that he portrayed with a rawness and vulnerability that leapt off the screen.

Very sad
Reviewed: 07-02-23
Knowing how the story after the story ends makes me very sad. I enjoyed the book, though. What a waste of a talented individual. To be given chances after chance after chance and still succumb to his addiction is heartbreaking, especially for someone who can identify with being in the grips of addiction and finding away out. Michael also found the way out, he just couldn’t stop himself from returning. RIP.

Story
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Stephen King really did a great job with this one. It is good from the beginning to the end. As those that have read his books know, they are very long. However, this one didn’t seem very long, it was that entertaining. Fascinating fairy tale!

Story
Solitary is the unforgettable life story of a man who served more than four decades in solitary confinement - in a six-foot by nine-foot cell, 23 hours a day, in notorious Angola prison in Louisiana - all for a crime he did not commit. That Albert Woodfox survived was, in itself, a feat of extraordinary endurance against the violence and deprivation he faced daily. That he was able to emerge whole from his odyssey within America’s prison and judicial systems is a triumph of the human spirit, and makes his book a clarion call to reform the inhumanity of solitary confinement....

Story of perseverance and a flawed “justice” system.

How could innocent men serve over 4 DECADES in prison, most of it in solitary confinement?! But I guess I shouldn’t ask, this isn’t the first time innocent men many years locked up for crimes they never committed....sadly, most of them are Black and Brown. The criminal justice system is terrible in this country.

Story
In five years, Jesmyn Ward lost five young men in her life - to drugs, accidents, suicide, and the bad luck that can follow people who live in poverty, particularly black men. Dealing with these losses, one after another, made Jesmyn ask the question: Why? And as she began to write about the experience of living through all the dying, she realized the truth - and it took her breath away. Her brother and her friends all died because of who they were and where they were from, because they lived with a history of racism and economic struggle that fostered drug addiction and the dissolution of family and relationships.

Very enjoyable book! I also found it to be entertaining and relatable. Unfortunately, these stories are all to common in the underprivileged and minority communities.

Philosopher, Broadway headliner, fighter, felon - Mike Tyson has defied stereotypes, expectations, and a lot of conventional wisdom during his three decades in the public eye. Bullied as a boy in the toughest, poorest neighborhood in Brooklyn, Tyson grew up to become one of the most thrilling and ferocious boxers of all time - and the youngest heavyweight champion ever. But his brilliance in the ring was often compromised by reckless behavior.

Good, not great.

I read this immediately after reading Ali:A Life, big mistake. The later was such a great book it made Undisputed Truth a bit of a let down. That’s not to say I did not enjoy it. The book was very believable, after all, some of the stuff Tyson allegedly did was so insane it would’ve had to have been true! The best part of the book was his time with Cus. The book is funny, sad and lets the reader get to know Iron Mike a little better. With that being said, I recommend it!
