Initially, I had skipped this book and listened to books 1, 2, and 4 because of the negative reviews about the stuttering of the female protagonist. Mu curiosity got the better of me and I broke down to give it a listen, prepared to hate it. No doubt, the stuttering was bad, particularly in the beginning. However, the character and the story developed and toward the end, after she had revisited a childhood trauma, it was very much improved. I really enjoyed the message about healing gleaned from this part of the story.

It was a powerful and achingly beautiful love story with mature characters who were willing to be vulnerable with each other. The passion, tenderness and desire the lovers had for each other clased with the noble ideas of duty and sacrifice for the community and loved ones sent me on an emotional roller coaster. The author does belabor many points and at times goes into way too much detail about things that don't really add to the story but I wasn’t prepared to put the book down because of that.
This story also didn’t over play the love, hate dynamic which I find cringe worthy to loathsome depending on my mood. Very different from the other books. I found myself fast forwarding book 1 because of the contempt and disgust the female lead had for the male lead in one breath and in the very next breath love, regard and all the lovely emotions. That level of vacillation doesn't jive well with my sensibilities.
The narrator is perfection. His telling of this story completely immersed me in the author's masterfully built world. When Ivan told Lavinia "You are mine," it struck me to my core and I was like yeah, girl you are his.

Beautifully written and beautifully narrated. This is my favorite in the series so far with one more to go.

The storyline about two broken people coming together was endearing and so true for this moment in history. However, it read at many times like a therapy session. Everyone was so self aware, in touch with their pain and working through their $h^t
But, it's almost never like this. Everyone said all the right things at the right moment and it didn't seem plausible, even for fiction. Tuesday also went on, and on, and on, and on about how fine Hurley was, it was like we get it he is a god. I did like the narration and the storyline overall.

Yes. the other reviewers are right, the narration is absolutely terrible. Despite this, the story is still touching and beautiful and inspiring. Some people won't have it in them to listen, so if you're one of those people just get the book. In my mind I was able to replace the voice of the narrator with other voices more befitting of this wonderful story.

I enjoyed the plot and was totally cheering for the lovers even when it was impossible. It was so refreshing to read a romance where the female lead is not in her twenties with an absolutely perfect body. Taryn was written as a flawed, real woman who chose to open herself to a new way of being in the world in her forties. I love it even when a fictional Black woman character steps into self love, pleasure and joy. The love and deep, soul touching passion in this book will make you question every relationship you've ever had or attempted cause clearly it was a failure in comparison. I enjoyed listening and have already recommended it to my friends.
