Stopping at the grocery store for carrots shouldn't be dangerous, but for Shelby Nichols, it changes her life forever. During a bank robbery, she is caught in the cross-fire and grazed by a bullet to the head, leaving her with the ability to read minds. Not only is she hearing what everyone thinks about her, but the gunman who shot her is out to silence her forever. In her fight to stay alive she is saved from certain death by a handsome hit-man with ties to organized crime.

So Much Fun!
Reviewed: 01-15-22
I follow reviewer Shelley shamelessly and she has never steered me wrong. I got this book solely upon her recommendation, but then it sat in my library unlistened to for a year or so. When I was coming down from an awesome trilogy, (The Body Reader by Anne Frasier) and not wanting it to end, I was sad and grouchy about not having anymore in that series, and the title "Carrots" just seemed happy and light for my commute home. An hour later, when I got home, I was hooked! Shelby is so much fun! I am right now on book #5 and do not like it when I have to turn it off. I am so glad there are currently 15 books in the series and am sure I will not come up for air until I am done with them all. They only get better as the series is progressing! When my teenage son heard part of this book he got worried for Shelby and had to know how everything turned out for her. You just can't help rooting for her!
The only complaint I have about the series is that the men are just so over the top too good to be true. But then it is total escapist fantasy, so why not have a supportive husband in fantasyland?

Story
Melanie is a very special girl. Dr. Caldwell calls her "our little genius". Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh. Melanie loves school. She loves learning about spelling and sums and the world outside the classroom and the children's cells. She tells her favorite teacher all the things she'll do when she grows up.

I am SO NOT a Zombie Story person!
Reviewed: 09-13-21
At the bookstore one day my teenage son asked me to buy him this book, and I would never say No to a request for a book! Then a week later he wasn't feeling well and asked me to read to him, "like you did when I was little." Well, of course, I did that too, with tears in my eyes. He fell asleep by the end of the 1st chapter, but I had to keep reading. And didn't give him back his book until I had finished! Then I had to listen to the audiobook. Then I had to watch the movie. Then I listened to the prequel, "The Boy on the Bridge" and loved it just as much! So, even if you are the last person that would ever think you would like a Zombie book, you should give this book a chance! I've recommended it extensively to friends and family and everyone who has read it loves it!

Missed my exit driving home from work!
Reviewed: 09-13-21
I was so wrapped up in this book that I missed my exit driving home from work! How does that even happen? I had to drive across the Bay Bridge and into San Francisco before I could turn around (due to construction) but I didn't even mind the extra half hour it added to my commute because it allowed me to listen longer! My kitchen has never been so clean either. I had to keep finding housework to do so that I could listen more! It is a story that stays with you long after it is over and I do not hesitate to recommend it to everyone in my life!
Yes, I recognize the similarities to Hunger Games. And that arrogant males make very different heroes than self-doubting females do, but, in spite of those things, this book is still well worth your time!

Fun!
Reviewed: 09-13-21
I need constant new books for my commute to work, and I tend to rate them on whether or not I am looking forward to my commute because I want to listen to my book. The only word for this book is Fun! It was a fun story and fun to listen to; light and kept me engaged. And yes, I definitely was looking forward to my commute home to get more time with this story! Getting the next 2 books in the series was a definite Yes!
The narrator does a good job with the likable, good ole boy voice of Sam Cable. But did he have to make Rita Goldman such a horrific shrew??? I thought she was going to be the "bad guy" with how evil her voice sounds. It made it hard to like her with the awful voice the narrator spoke her lines with.
