Story
The drip paintings of Jackson Pollock, trailblazing Abstract Expressionist, appear to be the polar opposite of Thomas Hart Benton's highly figurative Americana. Yet the two men had a close and highly charged relationship dating from Pollock's days as a student under Benton. Pollock's first and only formal training came from Benton, and the older man soon became a surrogate father to Pollock.

Excellent book for Pollock fans

Extremely well written book. it was fascinating to hear about all the artistic influences that went into Pollock's work. Highly recommended. the narrator has a smooth voice and the pacing of the reading is great. A few mispronounced words here and there, but very good.

Story
With the critically acclaimed Sin in the Second City, best-selling author Karen Abbott “pioneered sizzle history” (USA Today). Now she returns with the gripping and expansive story of America’s coming-of-age - told through the extraordinary life of Gypsy Rose Lee and the world she survived and conquered. America in the Roaring Twenties. Vaudeville was king. Talking pictures were only a distant flicker. Speakeasies beckoned beyond dimly lit doorways; money flowed fast and free.

confusing and shallow

I do not recommend this book for people interested in the life of Gypsy Rose Lee. It flips back and forth between two narratives, a problem compounded when one just listens to the book. It reads like fiction, though the intro establishes a connection between the author and one of the book's subjects, June Havoc. That connection is never explored, developed or used. I do not recommend this book.

Story
From its debut in 1962, Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? was a wild success and a cultural lightning rod. The play transpires over one long, boozy night, laying bare the lies, compromises, and scalding love that have sustained a middle-aged couple through decades of marriage. It scandalized critics but magnetized audiences. Across 644 sold-out Broadway performances, the drama demolished the wall between what could and couldn’t be said on the American stage and marked a definitive end to the I Love Lucy 1950s.

not that insightful

Most of the material in this book is available elsewhere. If you've read the Albee bios there isn't much in here to add to that. There's a lot of filler at the end as well.

Story
On May 31, 2014, in the Milwaukee suburb of Waukesha, Wisconsin, two 12-year-old girls attempted to stab their classmate to death. Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier’s violence was extreme, but what seemed even more frightening was that they committed their crime under the influence of a figure born by the internet: the so-called “Slenderman”. Yet the even more urgent aspect of the story, that the children involved suffered from undiagnosed mental illnesses, often went overlooked in coverage of the case.

I quit close to the end of chapter 3. Meandering, hard to understand where the book is going or why we need to know all the backstory. Perhaps if you already know the facts of the case this is an interesting book but if not, I don't recommend it.

Very, very basic material. Nothing special. Not sure why this book is getting so much attention.
