My favorite so far
Reviewed: 04-10-25
I have now read five novels by Ryan Hyde, this is easily my favorite so far. The characters are so well developed that I feel like I know them and they are so easy to care about. The performance was also very good and I look forward to listening to more by this reader. Highly recommended, five stars.

I loved this book and the narration was ok. However, not to spoil this for anyone, but the ending? Just….no.

Story
Skyler finally had it all...but for the third time, the state had taken everything away from him. It wasn't his fault, though, or was it? If only he hadn't been so stupid. If only he hadn't been so careless. If only he hadn't fallen in love with his best friend, Cameron. Now, sitting in the social worker's SUV, he stared at his new house and the strangers standing on the front steps. His life had been an uphill climb, and now he had to start over. Again. One day, he might call them family, but he had finally learned his lesson.

Good story, not so great narration
Reviewed: 01-13-25
I read this on my kindle a couple years ago and enjoyed it so much that I decided to try the audio book. I should have re read the kindle version. The narration is so over the top, especially the Tracy character, plus it drives me crazy when he bursts out laughing after reading “Skyler laughed”. Now I don’t think I will ever be able to read the book again without hearing the narrator in my head.

Story
Brady is my overprotective best friend, and I love him like this. He's so much bigger than me and makes me feel safe. We are opposites in so many ways, but when I'm cuddled up against him and he reads to me, all those differences fade away. Brady promises to be friends forever, but what will he say when he finds out my secret? Will I lose my best friend and the boy I love more than life itself?

Constant crying

First off, let me just say that the narrator was freaking amazing. As for the story, much of it was too far over the top to be believable. The way Zach was always sitting on Brady’s lap and constantly being carried around by him. I didn’t notice much difference between 13 year old Zach and 18 year old Zach. One of the better parts of the story was when the MC’s were separated for six months and it appeared that Zach might actually find some independence, but no….. While the story held me until the end, I was really glad when it was over.

Story
It’s been a year since eighteen-year-old River Lang’s best friend died in a car accident. And every day since, he’s had to pass by the depressing billboard that appeared as a result: a texting and driving PSA that reduces Dylan to a cautionary tale and River to the best friend of the dead kid at school. Dylan was so much more than a statistic, though, and River hates that everyone in town seems to have forgotten. When he’s caught improving (a.k.a. vandalizing) Dylan’s billboard, River is blackmailed into joining the Affinity Trials.

Story
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Another King masterpiece
Reviewed: 09-09-24
I tore through this story in three days in three sittings. Brilliant and imaginative, I never wanted it to end. If I have any complaints, it would be the fact that the narrator Seth Numrich had given a wonderful voice to the character of Mr Boditch, then at a point in the story where Boditch leaves a recorded message for the MC, Charlie, King himself steps in to play the part of Boditch, which I found confusing and unnecessary. Other than that, the narrative was brilliant. I would love to see a sequel to this one.

I liked this story, however the narration was really flat....it was as if the man was simply reading aloud instead of performing it. I could not tell one character from another. I wish i had read the book instead of listening. That being said I loved this prequel highlighting Phantom's humble beginning.
