This sprawling and often brutal novel, set in the rich farmlands of California's Salinas Valley, follows the intertwined destinies of two families - the Trasks and the Hamiltons - whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.

Greatest Characterization of All Time
Reviewed: 01-24-19
I started to get discouraged at first as the pace seemed dreadfully slow and over-descriptive, but man the characters in the book are some of the best done ever. I feel like I have met all of them at some point in my life and seen their motives in action. Book was probably 5 hours too long but still a masterpiece. Steinbeck's writing style is stunning and the narrator was absolutely perfect, made you feel like you were back in time.

Story
The Galactics arrived with their Battle Fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined a vast Empire that spanned the Milky Way. Today, Battle Fleet 921 is returning to Earth. It hasn't been seen by human eyes since our blissful day of Annexation. But what should be a joyful occasion, a chance to grovel at the feet of superior lifeforms, is rapidly becoming a nightmare.

Thoughtfully Narrowing My Eyes
Reviewed: 11-30-18
Well, if you're this far into the series, you know what you're getting into. It's kinda like the Hardy Boys -- the plot is pretty much the same and the characters behave the same way every single time. If the author changes things too much up, he risks his audience getting mad at him. However this one could have used alot more variety in the writing.
Not just the plot, but the writing style itself was extremely repetitive. Everyone is constantly looking thoughtful and narrowing their eyes at each other. The female characters are also falling flat here. I'd like to see a female villain version of Claver. One where McGill can't bed her, and she's the one doing all the teasing and he can never seem to make her his conquest. Use his sexual energy against him. Call it Paradox World or something.
Also we need more Harris trash talking. He's the best character in the book that puts McGill in check, but even he seemed pretty flat here.

Best Book I Have Ever Listened To
Reviewed: 11-10-17
Wow, typically I listen to audio books for 30 minute to 60 minutes at a time. This was so engaging that I just listened to 5 hours in a row and could not turn it off. Usually a book this long starts to get tedious, but the author really knows how to build things up to a crescendo so that I actually felt my interest build as it went on and did not get story fatigue.
In history lessons, we get glimpses or brief paragraphs of the fascinating clash of civilizations between the Conquistadors and the Indian empires, but Hancock really brings the whole thing to life and you feel like you are there. He answers alot of questions and unravels the mystery of the encounters that is very satisfying.
His action sequences are amazing and you can tell the small details he throws in are METICULOUSLY researched. Tension, sense of dread, and the cunning and violence are illustrated well.
Narrator was also top notch, even surpassing R.C. Bray, which I thought was impossible. His repertoire of so many different voices and distinct personalities really adds to the deep characterization.
You get to see the motivations of all the different sides and this story flows really really well.

Daniella
Reviewed: 10-11-16
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The corridor scenes and journeys into the multi-verse were the best parts of the book. The sense of dread was done really well, along with the evil lab and how to escape it. This should have been the heart of the story.
What was most disappointing about Blake Crouch’s story?
The author's constant thoughts about Daniella take up 80% of the book. Charlie is just an afterthought. The lovemaking scenes were cliche and annoying.
How could the performance have been better?
I think someone else mentioned this, but the women would have been better depicted with just the narrator's normal voice, or an actual second female narrator. The change of the narrator's voice to a high-pitched voice was just completely distracting and cheesy.

Becoming Magic is book one of a complete course in becoming creator of your own exceptional life. In this book, I outline the exact steps which enabled me to move my own life from one of poverty and drudgery, to one of previously unimaginable wealth, purpose and joy. But Magic? I do hope you are joking! That's what I would have said, five or ten years ago. I once despised all things 'New-Age'; all these spiritual types and their airy-fairy views, their bad science and their irrational beliefs.

My New Favorite -- Quick and Simple
Reviewed: 08-30-15
What did you love best about Becoming Magic?
A lot of the reviews were concerned that she took a while to get to the "what to do" part.
However, I've been in the reality creation genre for about 3 years now, and a lot of the concerns I have had with the material from other authors, are exactly what she addresses. So I did appreciate the first half, and her explaining the setbacks that a lot of people have.
I also appreciated that the author attempts to establish credibility with the readers. She says that she donates all of her profits from these books to charity.
I REALLY appreciated her description of "snapbacks," as I just had one, and it's exactly what led me to this book.
Finally, I also liked that this was a short, and her techniques are very simple.
In summary, I am very excited to get going on the exercises, as you don't practice magic, you ARE magic.

Esther kept cutting him off and not letting him finish his sentence, and also the whole side track about GMO foods really lowered the quality of the presentation. Wayne was trying to pour out his past experience to learn from it but she kept cutting him off. Though I do appreciate her trying to steer him back to positive thoughts, it would have been nice if she let him finish a sentence.

Have to agree with K. Maloo, this is the best book on this subject I've come across. The meditations are amazing and I wish there was a workbook that came with it so I could go back and reference the meditations.
I will probably go back and buy the book itself so I can reference the meditations, as many of them are highly effective techniques I've used in the past -- before I have ever heard of the whole Reality Creation craze.
One funny story, there is a section where he talks about not getting mad at your GPS. Well I was literally just scolding my GPS in the car 1 second before that part came on lol. Out of all the books I have listened to on this subject, this one seems to be the most practical and grounded.

My spiritual side loves the message, but the cynic in me finds it hard to get over questioning the source of the material, as the "automatic writing" concept is not a new one. Some previous examples: "The Book of the Law" (Aleister Crowley), "Seth Speaks," (Jane Roberts), "the Law of Attraction" (Esther and Jerry Hicks). In all of these works an entity appears, and it explains a version of Buddhist mysticism, and repackages it for a western audience.
The audience, generally unfamiliar with this line of thinking, finds it liberating, empowering, and life-changing, since this is the first time they have heard this information. In this case, the audience is for practicing Christians specifically.
Don't let my cynicism stop you. In fact, I do agree with the philosophy being taught in this book, and I do believe we can be conduits for messages, it's just hard to take it seriously when this idea has already been done so many times before.
Another book I did find life changing was Living Buddha, Living Christ. Yoga and meditation are also ways of practicing the message and daily life. Theosophy, Carl Jung, and Madame Blavatsky are also good places to research as well.
Best wishes on your spiritual journey.
