Story
Parker Valentine has always dreamed of opening her own winery in her hometown of Boulder, Colorado. But she gets more than she bargained for when a food and wine critic unexpectedly shows up at Vino Valentine on opening day. A negative review could be fatal for her business, and not only does he seem to hate her chardonnay, he also collapses and dies shortly after drinking it. Although Parker hoped that the attendees would put a cork in it, soon her winery is at the center of a social media firestorm. With #killerchardonnay trending online, Parker's business is in danger of closing.

Ok, will probably try next in series
Reviewed: 07-26-24
It was a decent light read, but I always felt like I was 2 steps ahead of the MC. Also, I alternated between being empathetic toward her and thinking she was often incredibly hateful when she was speaking to those around her and when she spoke about them to others. The narrator was mostly ok, though, except accents were bad, and I really, really wish she wouldn’t turn all her middle t’s into d’s - boddle, commiddment, edcedera… that nearly made me stop listening.

July 1912. Lady Hardcastle and her tenacious lady’s maid, Florence Armstrong, are enjoying a convivial gathering at the home of their dear friends, the Farley-Strouds. The only fly in the idyllic ointment seems to be the lack of musical entertainment for the forthcoming summer party—until, that is, Lady Hardcastle’s brother Harry calls with news of a murder.

Already listened twice
Reviewed: 05-25-24
I got this 3 days ago and have already listened twice. This one is quite a bit different from past stories because of focus and because Emily and Flo are discounted more than usual. But as always, they handle with humor and style, and their incredible banter. Narration is also great. Is it too late for the next one to come out?

Get over it
Reviewed: 05-28-23
I really wanted to like this series, but it took everything I had to finish this book. I love cozies, but there are 2 times they drive me insane: 1) when the police constantly fit a character to a crime no matter what happens and, 2) when the suspect /suspect’s friend/family are constantly being irritated they’re a suspect, when it’s completely reasonable for them to be suspected. This book (and the first in the series) some how manages to do both. I didn’t even know that was possible. Stop whining! Stop the repetition! Maybe just investigate to clear your/their name, but stop harping on how horrible they are to investigate you/your family. And for someone who is so afraid of confrontation, the mc sure is confrontational. I get that she’s supposed to be growing/getting more self-confident, and it makes sense when she is confronted and is willing to push back to protect her family. But, she is constantly confrontational. I love the concept of this series - the setting, the family, etc. but I don’t think I will continue.

Story
November 1911. Lady Emily Hardcastle is celebrating her birthday by seeing a play at the Duke’s Theatre in Bristol with her maid and confidante, the inimitable Flo. Act One is a triumph. Then Act Two opens with a body on stage—a real one. One of the cast has been brutally murdered during the interval. When other matters get in the way of Inspector Sunderland overseeing the case himself, he asks the ever-resourceful Lady H to keep a watchful eye on the suspects—and his police colleagues.

Really love this series. The camaraderie and conversation never fail to pick up my mood. And, the performance, as usual was spot on. Enjoyed hearing more about Flo via her sister. This is one of the few cozy series I will re-read b/c I love the feel and humor of the books at least as much as the mystery.

There’s a literary niche for all tastes including those who think that either Agatha Christie wasn’t funny enough or that PG Wodehouse didn’t feature anywhere near as many baffling murders as he could have. The Case of the Canterfell Codicil is a classic, cozy, locked-room mystery written in the style of an homage to PG Wodehouse.

The description of Wodehouse meets Christie is perfect. Nothing like light-hearted murder. Truly love Beaujolais, and the narration was fantastic.

I love this series and the narrator is spot-on. The banter between Lady Hardcastle and Flo manages to make me smile no matter what’s going on in the world. I like that the 2 of them are genuinely nice people, but pack a punch (or pistol, or…) when needed. Already looking forward to next in series.

Savannah Cade's dreams are coming true. The Claire Donovan, editor-in-chief of the most successful romance publishing company in the country, has requested to see the manuscript Savannah's been secretly writing. The only problem: she's an editor for a different company, and their philosophy is only highbrow works are worth printing and romance should be reserved for the lowest level of Dante's inferno.

I love this series, but didn’t enjoy this one quite as much as the others. The focus wasn’t always on Daniel and/or Miriam, in fact they were very peripheral in parts. This book also didn’t have all of the regular characters and I really missed them. I caught myself wondering if this was an intro to a new series. Still really enjoyed, but hoping focus (and previous supporting characters) return in next one.

The outcry when Conan Doyle pushed Sherlock Holmes over the Reichenbach Falls and the dismay when Freeling shot Van der Valk are as nothing compared to the chaos that ensues when Lorinda Lucas tries to dispose of Miss Petunia and her siblings, Lily and Marigold. Not only does the lid blow off the fictional village of St. Waldemar Boniface, but the literary colony of Brimful Coffers is shaken to its foundations.

Very slow start

This started soooo slowly. The majority of the book was background. The voices weren’t always consistent. Macho and Freddie, in particular, often were mixed up. A couple of the voices were grating and I couldn’t wait until those characters left the scene. Overall, I’m glad I stuck with the book and will listen to the next one. If the glacial pace continues in the second book, though, I won’t continue to the third.

Story
An ax murder leaves Franki less than jazzed.... Jazz Fest is in full swing in The Big Easy, but PI Franki Amato is singing the blues. The owner of an historic Italian grocery and deli is murdered in a manner eerily reminiscent of the Axeman of New Orleans, a notorious serial killer who hasn’t struck in over a century, and someone Franki knows has been arrested for the crime. Adding to her distress, Franki, her mom, and her meddling Sicilian nonna finally meet her fiancé’s family, but the tone of their encounter is decidedly downbeat.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair review and I am so glad I did! I can’t imagine how I have not started this series previously, but I will be going back and listening to those I’ve missed. The mystery was interesting, the characters developed, and the writing was often LOL funny. Returning characters were introduced in such a way that I didn’t feel like I was missing something as someone new to the series, but there wasn’t so much time spent on the reintroduction that I would have been annoyed if had already known them - a balance that many series’ authors miss. I loved the narrator, and can’t imagine anyone better at giving voice to these quirky characters. I rated 4, instead of 5, only because of a few brief slips of accent, but they were so small that that they had no impact on my enjoyment of the book and listening to the bloopers included at the end just made my smile last longer. Now, time to start listening to the earlier books…
