Enjoyable change of pace

I love the concept of the story playing out as part of a game. The main character dying at the beginning helps to show that he is not perfect or overpowered. It also allows you to grow from the bottom up. With that said not knowing the full background of how the player is controlled or who he actually is makes it hard to connect with them a bit. I feel as we go along the series we might get more into that and more understanding of the game mechanics so it isn't a huge drawback.

As I did not read the first book there were some parts I felt a little lost but other than that I really enjoyed the story. An interesting take on the effects of addicition and how depression and grief can effect us. The narrator did a good job of conveying the lack of emotion when necessary.

Story
If you had the chance to live forever, would you take it? It's 2053: An old man, Viktor Erikson, lies on his deathbed. Alone and with no known relatives, he is tended to by Olivia, a nurse. He has only one request: that she reads to him. The request is not unusual, but the battered, leather-bound tome she must read is no ordinary book. Written in 1839, it chronicles the discovery of the fountain of youth by Morgana de la Motte - and Viktor Erikson.

Good insight on the difficulties one would possibly face if the myth was true. The switching between the present and reading of the book was tied in very well. As it went along I thought i could tell how it was all going to wrap up and while I was in the ballpark it still managed to suprise me as it went.

Stong, consistant story that is easy to follow but not easy to predict. At the end I was excited for the next book to be released. Luke Daniels has a strong idea for each character and has been reliable through each book so far.

A perfect mix of old-timey and possible post-apocalyptic. Nox fits you usual law bringer in an outlaws world but still manages to change things up. Narrator does a great job of making him feel menacing and giving variety to other voices.

I actually came across this book because I got a code from the narrator and listened to the first book. I knew I was going to keep reading the series later. When I saw the bundle I was excited even though I would have already listened to a 3rd of it already but it was definitely worth it. Engaging main character and you care for her and her story line.
