Story
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

I am speechless. Heartbroken. Since there is a 15 word minimum I will go on. From inside Jim’s beautiful mind and heart we feel viscerally what slaves had to endure. A masterpiece.

Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

A runaway international bestseller, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry followed its unassuming hero on an incredible journey as he traveled the length of England on foot—a journey spurred by a simple letter from his old friend Queenie Hennessy, writing from a hospice to say goodbye. Harold believed that as long as he kept walking, Queenie would live. What he didn’t know was that his decision to walk had caused her both alarm and fear. How could she wait? What would she say? Forced to confront the past, Queenie realizes she must write again.

This is the most beautiful book on Audible I have ever had the pleasure to hear! Not only the story, which is absolutely beautifully written, but the author’s own reading of this awesome journey he and his wife took with his autistic son. I see the hand of God in all of this. And, I, was raised by an atheist.

Story
Meet Harold Fry, recently retired. He lives in a small English village with his wife, Maureen, who seems irritated by almost everything he does, even down to how he butters his toast. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning the mail arrives, and within the stack of quotidian minutiae is a letter addressed to Harold in a shaky scrawl from a woman he hasn’t seen or heard from in twenty years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye.

I'm reviewing this book months after reading it because I realize what a sweet feeling it has left me with. During the tumultuous time leading up to the US election, rioting in the streets for black lives, and freaking out about the affects of Q anon and right wing media on the minds of our people...leading to the possible destruction of our democracy...I was looking for comfort food. A friend recommended this lovely book. It's got that slowness that puts you in a dream you don't want to wake from. It was just perfect. The warmth has lingered.
