Story
Miss Ethel Tither has made herself deeply unpopular in the quintessentially English village of Hilary Magna, since she goes out of her way to snoop on people, and interfere with their lives. She is found floating in a cesspool, having been bludgeoned prior to drowning in the drainage water. This is, in every way, a murky business; realising that they are out of their depth, the local police quickly call in the Yard.

George Bellairs is simply the imperial majesty of Golden Age crime classical books. Ric Jerome is perfect for rendering the villagelife and time of rural England in the dear old 1930-1940s. Love you all!!!!

Story
It's a rainy, uneventful evening in the Oddfellows' Arms until a man bursts into the pub, clearly unstable, and ranting about a body in Fennings' Mill. The police investigate and stumble upon a body-the face smeared with theatrical make-up and a false mustache pasted neatly over the lip. Once the national news descends, Inspector Faddiman calls in Inspector Littlejohn to help him uncover the dark, hidden secrets in this quiet, provincial town. Soon it becomes clear that a lot of people can't, and won't tell the truth.

Wonderful George Bellairs! Horrible wokers!
Reviewed: 09-23-23
George Bellairs is simply the best of the bunch from the Golden Age! It is so refreshing hearing real un-woked language in its proper sphere, where no hatred but only real-life speech acording to its time exists. Scary book as the madness of James Faddingman draws nearer to the edge of the abyss in the end, but ten times scarier still is the diabolical Woke-reviewers on this page, who transform themselves to false angels of light, as do their spiritual father the devil, and make a song and dance about the title containing the word "Spiv", as George Bellairs uses the term in its neutral form, denoting time and place of the speakers, not hate against the Jewish People

The April Fool’s Day had been a roaring success for all, it seemed - except for poor Mr. Cartell, who had ended up in the ditch - forever. Then there was the case of Mr. Percival Pyke Period’s letter of condolence, sent before the body was found - not to mention the family squabbles. It was a puzzling crime for Superintendent Alleyn.

rest in piece Jeremy Sinden, and Nagaio Marsh. thank you for this wonderful book. what the other country-cousin reviewers fail to comprehend is that the story centers around a dear old fusspot of an aristocrat (or not as the case turns out, but still a sweetiepie). Therefore Jeremy Sinden is perfect

A most delightful book, and a perfect example of how audiobooks can make a written book soar to heights of wonderful delights which reading on your own, inside you as it were, never can be experienced. WONDERFUL COCKYPET, THE TERROR OF KENT, STRIKES AGAIN. And the wonderful Edward is such a darling boy with his fuges and fantasies, "forever carting high-explosives out of burning buildings". PERFECT READING BY DAVID THORN.

The snow is thick, the phone line is down, and no one is getting in or out of Warbeck Hall. All is set for a lovely Christmas, with friends and family gathered round the fire, except as the bells chime midnight, a murder is committed. But who is responsible? The scorned young lover? The lord's passed-over cousin? The social-climbing politician's wife? The Czech history professor? The obsequious butler? And perhaps the real question is: Can they survive long enough to find out?

Cyril Hare Does Not Play Fair. That is to say, his books, twists and plots turn around such obscure legal minutia that even Johnny Cockran's Cheewabacca Defense wouldn't make the solving of them reach first base

Horribly disappointing last effort by J. P. Walsh
Reviewed: 08-13-20
Jill Paton Walsh turns 180 degrees against her own Christian repute as well as Dorothy Sayers' firmly established Christian faith of Lord Peter Wimsey, and starts swinging at God Almighty with a sledgehammer, time and again replacing the Christian dogma of Wimsey with blatant and blasphemous atheism. So sad. Such a waste of a woman in the evening of her own life. But reader is very good, other things notwithstanding
