Story
It’s not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil. He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. He’s going to need courage, he’s going to need wit, and he’s going to need some magic powers of his own. But first, he’s going to need pants.

Mediocre

The great narrator is the only reason I stuck with it to the end.
The world isn't particularly interesting or new, but the foregoes and real character development or over arching plot in favor of focusing on exposition and world building.
The dialog is hit or miss with lines that are supposed to come off as witty landing as flat as a high schooler writing fan fiction for The West Wing.

Applying a principle of charity, maybe this book would be better in print. As an audibook though, the pace is way too slow and not enjoyable. I gave it five hours before giving up.

John M. Ford was the kind of writer that made audiences’ eyes light up and made other writers want to either worship him or assassinate him. He was a brilliant stylist and clever storyteller. He wrote everything. Short stories (award winners), novels (award winners), plays, poetry (award-winning), sketches, comedy monologs, games, Star Trek™ tie-ins, puzzles and parodies.

Just be aware that the novel is incomplete because it will leave you wanting more and not by design. It really a shame we'll never get to explore this world fully as I enjoyed the set up and the characters that were introduced.

Story
When an experiment to study quantum uncertainty goes spectacularly wrong, physics student Bill Rustad and his friends find that they have accidentally created an inter-dimensional portal. They connect to Outland - an alternate Earth with identical geology, but where humans never evolved. The group races to establish control of the portal before the government, the military, or evildoers can take it away. Then everything changes when the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts in an explosion large enough to destroy civilization and kill half the planet.

Story
Once Homo sapiens reigned supreme, spreading from star system to star system in an empire that encountered no alien life and thus knew no enemy.... save itself. As had happened many times before, the most primal human instincts rose up, only this time armed with the advanced scientific knowledge to create a genetically engineered smart virus that quickly wiped out humanity to the last man. That man is Ruslan, the sole known surviving human being in the universe.

Even Ray Porter can't save this book
Reviewed: 12-19-21
I downloaded this book for a road trip because I enjoyed Ray Porter's past work narrating the Bobiverse books as well as Project Hail Mary. Sadly, the source material is so poor that no narrator could save it, and Porter's talents go to waste.
The story is poorly paced with flat characters and an uninspired plot. The writing itself is choppy and amateurish more likely to priduce eye rolls than an emotional response.
Hard pass and thank you Audible for a generous refund policy.

Boring, deriviative world - seriously, you were inspired by some ants and fungus and not The Last of Us? Yeah, right
The narrator isn't great, granted he isn't working with much
20 hours in and I was still looking for a plot, eventually decided enough was enough and it was time to give it up and kick it to the curb. I've had plenty of Audible books over the years that were mediocre, but this is the first book that was so bad that I'm taking Audible up on their generous refund policy.

Fun course but Professor Fears is not for everyone
- By Quaker on 11-04-13
Disappointing
Reviewed: 07-08-18
One of the most disappointing courses by The Learning Company I've ever gone through.
In the areas Prof. Fears covered that I know well, I knew how he blatantly disregarded the controvery of some statements and where he got critical issues completely wrong, which makes me suspect of the eras I know less about.
His entire course is blatantly cenetered on European and US history, apparently Asia had no world effect except Budda, Chairman Mao, and being on the receiving end of the atomic bomb. Africa similarly has nothing to contribute to define the world after Ancient Eygpt, and much of that history was presented by reading the Bible is litteral history (Moses did in fact speak to a burning bush, not an allegory, never new a scholar whould admit to believing myth as truth).
In the end, this was not the college level course the Learning Company proports to provide, but rather reads like a bad middle school text book that sacrifices questions and debates for easy narratives.
Save your time and avoid this one.
